Miguel’s smile wavers and that pitying look is back. “Hey, I know what happened was so sudden, but we’re good, right? I didn’t even see this coming with Dominic, but then he showed up at my beach party and it was just kind of like booooom!” He throws his fingers wide like explosions. “Fireworks, you know? I wouldn’t blame you at all if you’re mad, but it seems like you wanted it too since you’ve already found someone else. Who knows.” Miguel throws his arm over my shoulder. “Maybe we’ll even double-date. The two of us, hanging out again, just like old times.”
Except it wouldn’t be just like old times. It wouldn’t be the two of us, swimming at the beach or back on his couch playing video games, chowing down on his mom’s tamales while we planned epic cartoons we could make together or his abuelita talked about life in Mexico before moving here with Miguel’s mom and tías. I could definitely go for some of Mrs. Ortiz’s tamales right now, or a chat with Lita, but preferably without the guy who took my boyfriend.
“Yeah, don’t count on that happening.” Kavya comes up behind Miguel, voicing what was blaring in my head.
Miguel’s smile falters, and he starts walking back toward Dominic. “Well, the offer still stands if you want. I know we kind of grew apart the last few years, but I still think of you as a friend, Sean, and I don’t want this to get in the way of our friendship.”
He walks away and gets scooped up by D, falling effortlessly into a conversation while they kiss.
“What friendship?” Kavya says. “He’s acting like you two are back to playing Pokémon GO in seventh grade or something. It’s been years since the two of you even had lunch together.” She directs a very intimidating glare my way. “And what’s this about double dating? You’re not seriously telling me that you told your boyfriend-stealing ex–best friend about a new relationship before telling me, your actual best friend, right?”
“I guess technically I told Dominic first, then Miguel, then you.”
Kavya’s mouth drops open in shock. “You and Dominic were perfect for each other. You are both dickbags.”
That’s one of the things I like most about Kavya. She tells you her feelings as she’s feeling them, and there’s no questioning where she’s at. I just wish she’d be more willing to hear how I’m feeling lately, instead of moving on when I’ve wanted to vent about the breakup.
