‘Can’t believe they didn’t teach us any of this in school,’ I said, grunting as I rose to my feet, eyes fixed on my makeup bag. ‘This stuff would have been so much more useful than bloody trigonometry.’
One shower, two failed updos and a very poor attempt at a cat’s eye later, I opened the door to my suite to find Lenny waiting, a confused expression crossing his offensively symmetrical face at the sight of me.
‘Why are you wearing a coat?’ he asked.
‘Because it’s cold?’ I replied, pulling the padded parka closely around me. ‘And we’re going outside?’
‘You don’t need a coat,’ he said, rolling his eyes. ‘Take it off.’
Reluctantly, I hung my coat back in the closet by the door, stepping out of the cabin in my black jeans and soft white jumper. After spending half an hour scouring YouTube for a cocktail-hour-on-a-yacht fashion tutorial, I checked the Juliette bible and was extremely relieved to discover I was supposed to wear my normal clothes and didn’t have to fashion a cocktail dress out of the duvet cover.
‘Only because you asked so nicely,’ I said, flashing him a frown.
‘I’m doing you a favour, you looked ridiculous. Follow me.’ Bristling at his familiar brand of Handsome Man Arrogance, I did as I was told, but only because I really didn’t have another option. ‘How was your meeting with the boss?’
‘It was fine,’ I replied, turning left and right as Lenny navigated the labyrinthine corridors of The Songbird with ease. ‘No drama.’
‘Not yet.’ He jogged down a grand circular staircase and I followed, taking the marble steps one at a time in my new deck shoes. They really didn’t go with my outfit, but I suspected they really didn’t go with any outfits and that was part of their lack of charm. ‘Don’t get taken in by her. She’ll chew you up and spit you out if you fall for it.’
I would have laughed, but when he looked back over his shoulder I could see he was completely serious. ‘She’s my boss, not my boyfriend,’ I replied. ‘And I’m not a baby, I think I know what I’m doing.’
‘So did the assistant before you,’ he smirked as he pushed a heavy door open and led me out onto the deck. ‘And the one before her and the one before him. Where are they now?’
