Then I noticed a woman watching us from across the street. She was laden with heavy shopping bags, but she’d stopped mid-stride and was looking between us and the TV screen in the window, which had gone back to showing our faces.
I nudged the others and we walked away, trying to look calm and casual. But when I checked behind us, the woman had run over to a policeman. “Run!” I told the others.
We ran down an alley and into another street. But within a minute, we started to hear sirens.
JD turned to me. “Danny, we’re going to need a car. Gabriel, I need a phone.”
We both nodded. I found a parked minivan and started working on the lock. Meanwhile, Gabriel sauntered off down the street to find someone to bump into. A moment later, I had the doors open and everyone was piling in. Two minutes and I had the engine started. Gabriel jumped in and we sped off down the street.
Gabriel passed JD the phone he’d stolen. JD dialed Kian, then put the phone on speaker. “It’s us. We’re all okay.”
Kian gave a long groan of relief. “What the feck happened in Siberia? They’re saying you killed seven people!”
“We didn’t kill anyone,” said JD. “This is Becker, he’s framed us so the police will hunt us down for him.”
“Yeah, well, it’s working,” said Kian. “You just made the top of Interpol’s most-wanted list.”
We all looked at each other. This was real. We were fugitives.
“We’ll call you when we figure something out,” said JD.
“Be safe,” Kian told us.
JD hung up and tossed the phone out of the window. We drove in silence for a moment until I quietly asked, “Where should I head?”
JD turned to me and shook his head. I don’t know. Then he glanced in the rear view mirror. I followed his gaze to Erin, who was in the rear seat, looking ridiculously small between Cal and Colton. I wished I could let him know that I was terrified for her, too. “Alright, options?” he asked.
“We can’t get a commercial flight,” said Bradan. “They’ll have the airports locked down. They know our faces.”
“Can’t charter a plane for the same reason,” said Gina.
“What about one of your buddies?” Colton asked, turning to Gabriel. “Smuggle us back to the US, the same way we got back to Latvia.”
“When I bribed the guy to fly us back to Latvia, no one was looking for us. The Germans must have started the manhunt while we were in the air. We’re too hot for any smuggler to touch, now,” said Gabriel.
