  25. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Caroline pulled a cigarette out of her bag, lit it up and dragged in deeply. ‘Want some?’ she offered. I realised from the smell that it was marijuana again.

I didn’t want to smoke a joint, though I knew Caroline was my key to Trent McLean. I thought about his smile again and then said, ‘I’ll have a little.’ I only breathed in the smallest bit, hoping it wouldn’t do anything, especially right before class. I handed it back to Caroline as quick as I could.

I looked around after a minute to make sure that nothing seemed funny. I had no idea how Caroline could go to class stoned. What did that even feel like? Our classes were weird enough as they were.

‘Hey, Caroline,’ I said as she lay back on the grass to gaze up at the sky and smoke more. ‘You know Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”? It’s awesome, isn’t it?’

‘It’s sexy as hell,’ she said, smiling wryly.

‘Yeah it is. You into anyone?’ I asked.

‘Why bother?’ she said. ‘They’re all into me. Might as well sit back and wait for the bees to come to the honey.’ She laughed.

‘And what about Trent McLean, is he into you?’

‘Hell no! He’s my brother’s best friend. We kissed ages ago and then he moved on to the next girl like he always does, and the next drug too.’

‘What do you mean, the next drug?’

Caroline sat up. ‘The weed we smoked? I got it from him,’ she explained. ‘You know, he does whatever is on the go. He especially loves the mushies.’

‘Right,’ I nodded and focused on kids kicking a ball on the oval to make sure I was still with it.

‘He’s hilarious. If only his parents knew what he was up to. They think he’s an angel. He may look like one, but he’s more like the devil. Devil boy!’ she said loudly, before laughing at her joke.

‘What do his parents do?’

‘You mean you don’t know?’ Caroline asked, wide-eyed.

While it was the last thing I wanted to do, I looked at her blankly.

‘Okay, here’s the way it is,’ she said. ‘Everyone seems like a hippie here but some people’s parents own vineyards, some are famous music or film industry people, or artists and things like that. Even thought my parents have a winery, they work their arses off. Dad’s also an ambo pulling people out of car crashes and stuff, and Mum works in the kitchen at another winery just up the road. Trent’s mum owns an organics shop and his dad is an architect. They live in that big house all by itself up on the hill overlooking the surf.’
