Ida’s lip trembled. It was as if she had suddenly become aware that Robin was actually dead.
“I was really irritated, thought he was being boring by wanting to sit inside the whole time.”
“How did he react to that?” Henrik asked, hearing Mia’s cell phone ring again.
“He said that I could go out however much I wanted as long as he didn’t have to. He was so, I don’t know, so strange those last days. He didn’t even want to go to the grocery store. He did it, but he was, I don’t know, just strange.”
“In what way?”
“He was in a hurry, wanted to rush all the time.”
“Was there any reason for him to be like that?”
Ida lowered her gaze, thinking for a moment, then nodded slowly.
“Yes...” she said, hesitating. “It was like he was scared.”
“Of what?” Henrik asked.
She swallowed, thinking. Henrik continued; he wasn’t going to let her go now, not when she seemed so close to revealing something more, maybe even an answer.
“He never told me,” she said.
“Do you have your own idea about what could have made him scared?”
Ida’s lips trembled again, but she regained her composure and the hard, defiant look in her eyes.
“Ida,” Magnus said. “You have to tell if you...”
“Yes! I know. But I don’t know... He said that he’d seen something.”
“When did he say that?”
“When he came home on Wednesday. I was there waiting for him and when he showed up, I thought he seemed a little strange, so I asked what it was. That was when he said that something had happened...”
“What sort of something?”
“That’s what I don’t know! He never said what it was. He just sat in front of his computer and then went to the window, tilted the blinds, looked out and then closed them again. He did that a lot. Then I got tired and went home. He was just as strange on Friday.”
“And you have no idea?”
Ida shifted uncomfortably in her chair.
“Yeah, well, so...he bought sometimes...from some older guy, and I thought it maybe had to do with that...”
“What did he buy?” Henrik asked.
“But, Ida, what did he buy?” Magnus echoed.
“It was just a little that he, like, smoked...”
“Were you ever with him when he met up with this older guy?”
“No, never...”
“Okay,” Henrik said calmly as he collected his thoughts. “But if we go back to Friday, you left Robin’s apartment around eight or eight thirty?”
“Yes, I went out to the bus. The bus stop is just across the street.”
“Did you see anyone in the stairwell or in the general area?”
“I didn’t meet any drug pushers, if that’s what you’re wondering,” Ida said sarcastically.
“But you didn’t observe anything else?”
“Observe?” she repeated. “Well, I saw...”
