“I just said what I thought,” Petra said. “And when she didn’t come home yesterday, we started calling her, but she wouldn’t answer.”

“How do you know that he calls himself Eternal_sunshine?”

“I saw it on her cell phone yesterday,” Petra said. “I was going to hang some laundry in her closet and just when I went in, her phone dinged and I...well, I looked. They say you should keep an eye on things, they say that, you know, on TV, so...and it said ‘Eternal_sunshine’...and so of course I had to ask her about it... Who saves a friend’s name like that, ‘Eternal_sunshine’? At first I thought it was a company or a sect or something...”

“And you think that it was a new relationship,” Henrik began, “but from what we know, they’ve been seeing each other for a while, at Kulturhuset and possibly other places...”

Silence fell across the table. Magnus cleared his throat.

“Yes, they certainly could have been seeing each other without us knowing. You can’t know everything all the time. For us, it became a problem when she wanted to sleep over at his place...”

“We were scared that she was being taken advantage of in some way...” Petra said. “There are so many strange people online...”

“But if we now think that she didn’t go to Robin Stenberg’s yesterday,” Henrik said, “where else would she go, do you think? Do you have any idea at all where she could be?”

“No,” Magnus whispered, his eyes empty.

“Where is my Ida?” Petra said, raising her voice.

“We’ll begin looking for her,” Henrik said. “But I ask that you really think carefully about where she might be. Could she have gone to a friend’s, or is there anywhere else she could be?”

Magnus turned his head away when Petra started to whisper to herself.

“Ida, my little Ida...”

“We’re going to do everything we can to...” Henrik began.

“Please,” Petra interrupted. “Tell me she’s okay.”

Henrik’s jaw muscles clenched.

“She’s okay. Say it. She has to be okay.”

“We’re going to find her,” Henrik said calmly, giving Mia a look that said he needed help.

“Say she’s okay. Say it,” Petra insisted.

“I know we’ll find her,” Henrik said.

“Say it!”

Henrik looked down, not wanting to meet Petra’s desperate look. His thoughts spun around in his head faster and faster until he couldn’t think anymore. He felt the words coming and was helpless to stop them.

“She’s okay.”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

A SNOWPLOW SPED through the sparkling winter landscape. Christian Bergvall sat in the cab. White snow whirled up behind him, tinted orange by the flashing warning lights before disappearing into the darkness at the side of the road. Sparks flew as the plow met the hard asphalt.
