“But you don’t need to know everything, either,” Ida said with a sigh.
“And Sofia can confirm that you were there?” Henrik asked Ida.
“Yes, she can,” Ida said. “Her mother can, too.”
Petra nodded.
“That’s right,” she said. “I’ve already talked with both of them. Sofia seems conscientious and smart.”
“What does that have to do with anything?” Ida said.
“Nothing, I just...” Petra fell silent, then sighed and met Henrik’s eyes. At the same time, Mia’s cell phone rang. She looked at it before pushing the button to ignore the call.
“As you know, we’re here to talk about Robin Stenberg,” Henrik said. “You were a couple?”
Ida rested her elbows on the table and laid her chin in her hands.
“Maybe,” she said.
“Were you or not?”
“We were, and we weren’t.”
“Ida,” Magnus said, “can’t you just answer properly?”
“Yes, okay, we were together.”
“How long had you known him?”
“Like, four months.”
Her eyes had again filled with tears. Magnus laid his arm across his daughter’s shoulders, but she shook it off.
“Do you know if Robin used drugs?” Henrik asked.
“I think so.”
“What?” Petra said, turning toward Ida. “Dear Lord, not that, too.”
“Why do you think that?” Henrik asked.
“He wrote a few songs about it. You just kind of know.”
“But did you ever see him under the influence?”
“No, but I wasn’t with him all the time.”
“Do you know who else he hung out with?”
“No, but he liked to hang out at the community arts center and other rehearsal spaces like The Bridge and stuff.”
“The Bridge?”
“Down in the industrial area somewhere.”
Henrik nodded.
“Have you tried drugs yourself?”
Ida shook her head.
Petra looked at her for a long time.
“Really! I haven’t!”
“Is it true that you were at Robin’s on Friday?” Henrik asked.
“Yes.”
“When were you there?”
“Like when did I get there and stuff, or what?”
“Yes.”
She dried her eyes with one arm.
“You left the house at four...” Petra began.
“I can talk for myself, can’t I?”
“Yes, of course. I just wanted to...”
Ida fell silent, her lips tightly closed.
“So you left the house here at four o’clock?” Henrik asked.
“Yes,” Ida mumbled, “and I went to Robin’s.”
“What did you do?”
“The usual.”
“Which is?”
“Just, like, hang out. Watch movies and stuff.”
“Did you notice anything unusual over the course of the evening?”
“Well, I wanted to go out and do something, but he didn’t want to. He’s usually always the one nagging to go out, but on Friday he didn’t want to. He, like, refused.”
“And what happened?”
“I went out by myself. Who wants to sit there moping around on a Friday night? I don’t, so I left. It was around eight, maybe eight thirty, I don’t remember exactly. I...”
