He got up and looked around. He saw no direct signs of a break-in or a struggle in the room.
“Are you finding anything?” he asked Anneli.
She shook her head just as Mia Bolander appeared in the doorway.
“And what do you make of this?” she said to Henrik.
“That whoever did it knew him.”
“Why do you think that?”
“His wallet is still here. Cell phone, too. Aside from the gash on his neck, there’s nothing to indicate that this is a crime scene. It’s remarkably clinical. This isn’t a typical murder. I...”
Henrik stopped short when he saw a number ticket on the floor from a take-a-number machine. It was in the corner, folded in such a way that he could see the first few letters. He put on gloves before picking it up.
“I’ll take that,” Anneli Lindgren said, holding out a plastic evidence bag.
Henrik dropped the ticket into it and looked around again. He had an uneasy feeling that they weren’t going to find anything important in the apartment. No fingerprints, no DNA. No mysterious telephone calls or testimonies from the neighbors, either.
“It could be revenge for something he did,” Henrik said. “Who is this guy? Anyone we know?”
“Not really,” Mia said. “But he’s not completely clean, if you catch my drift.”
“So what do we have on him?”
“Narcotics misdemeanors.”
Henrik sighed.
“For his own use, or for selling?”
“I can’t speak to that,” Mia said. “But it feels really shitty to have this on our plates right now. You and I should work on something else today.”
Henrik didn’t answer. He was looking around the room for potential hiding places where Robin may have kept his drugs.
After two hours, he gave up and decided to go down to the station. Once there, he poured a cup of coffee, and as he took a sip, he received confirmation from the technicians.
No drugs.
No traces of anything.
That clinched it. Whoever had been in Robin Stenberg’s apartment yesterday evening was no amateur. But the question remained: Why had that person been there?

CHAPTER THIRTEEN
JANA BERZELIUS ACCEPTED the bronze-colored key, signed the storage rental contract and paid the rent for the entire year in cash. The property owner, Stig Ottling, thanked her for her patronage and wished her good luck.
