‘Henry, are you out there? Your parents are on the telephone. They tried your mobile but you didn’t answer.’
Henry gave an impatient sigh, but I could feel his body preparing to move.
‘I told them you’re fine, just kissing Beatrice in the garden, but they wanted to say a quick happy New Year anyway, if you can tear yourself away?’
He stood up, tugging me with him. ‘I’m not facing them without you.’
‘You don’t have to face anything without me any more, as far as I’m concerned,’ I replied, almost delirious with happiness as I wound my arm through his.
‘Thanks, Cora,’ he mumbled as we reached the back door and found both my parents, Nana Joy as well as Jed and Mia all clustered in the doorway, wearing grins the size of watermelon slices.
‘Oh, phooee,’ she said, flapping an overexcited hand. ‘You might as well call me Mum.’
‘Happy New Year, sis,’ Jed said, giving me a nudge as I squeezed past him into the kitchen.
‘Happy New Life, more like,’ Nana Joy declared, patting me on my freezing cold cheek.
‘Happy old life, I think,’ I replied. ‘Just with some added extras.’
‘So now you’re finished proving Mum and Dad right, can we find out who won the tournament?’
So the Armstrongs saw in the new year cosied up in the living room with hot chocolate and marshmallows, a toasty fire, and a heated argument that resulted in Dad declaring a draw.
Sitting in the heart of my family home, leaning back against the man I loved, who I now knew loved me, my Nana Joy belting out Auld Lang Syne, my parents’ creases of worry replaced with laughter lines. Knowing Charis House was safe, I had to agree that for that one, sweet night, we were all winners.
My future forecast? It was going to be spectacular.
