This is square-sex-with-rounded-corners, intelligent, informed sex between two tender, intimately involved, loving persons. This can only be commended. This, if one likes, is a basic form of good sex. There is no reason it should ever be abandoned. It would be wrong to abandon it. Indeed, such sex might justifiably form the core of the sexual relationships of most individuals, and departures from it into imaginative sex would be just that, delightful side journeys into strange places, from which one could, delighted and refreshed, always return home to the intimate comfort of familiar lovings. Similarly, even if one should become enamoured of imaginative sex, one should be advised to continue the practice of basic sex. Reality and the sweet animal warmth of familiar lovings must never be rejected. In short, imaginative sex might function as a stimulating supplement to the standard sexual diet, or, if it becomes too exciting, and one becomes lost in feasts and banquets, one should never forget to return, with some regularity, to the common proteins of reality. The difficulty with basic sex, or “square-sex-with-rounded-corners,” is that, great as it is, it tends to pale with repetition. Pretty soon you are saying the same things to your wife that you said last night, and the night before; pretty soon you are falling into a mechanical routine of predictable manipulations; pretty soon both of you know what’s coming and, even though you love one another, sex, incredibly, begins not to mean that much between you. The exploratory glories of discovery and romance are behind you. Boredom yawns. The husband begins to notice the typists. The wife begins to read novels. If the husband and wife find it possible to take up imaginative sex he will presumably stop noticing the typists. They may be nice girls, and pretty, but to him, they will be dull, little more than bodies. And the wife may continue to read novels, but now in part to help her create her own, in her own life.
