That a long dress could make a girl look beautiful is surely a sufficient justification for her desiring to wear it. We might ask ourselves, however, if there may not be additional reasons why a girl might care for such a dress. I suspect there may be two. We live in a rushy, litter-strewn, chrome-plated world. In this world there seems little time for leisure, paying attention to one another and love. The longer dress speaks of a more refined, slower time, a time of gentleness, of romance, of pressed flowers, of speaking tenderly to one another. It is not reprehensible, then, for a girl to make, by means of a garment, a plea for these values. It is interesting, in this respect, to note that the girl who owns such a dress or dresses, usually also owns several miniskirts. Consistency is no more to be required of women than men. We all, from day to day, from time to time, have different moods and desire different things. The long dress also, it seems to me, has its lovely masochistic aspects. They may be reasonably clear by now. It identifies the girl, symbolically, with the women of an earlier time, when women were shackled as ladies, and were, in effect, the love prisoners of their husbands. It says, in effect, see, I am as they were. I, too, am a captive. I, too, cannot move freely. I accept the confinements of the role of lady. You will give me no alternative to do otherwise. You make me like this! Yes, I am now vulnerable. I am now as they were. I am now pretty; I am now helpless; I am now trivial; I am now a charming sex object. What are you going to do with me now? I know. You are going to treat me as such a woman. You are going to send me to the bedroom and teach me what it was to be such a woman. You are going to dare to use me as such a woman! On the other hand, it is well to remember that this same girl probably owns two dozen miniskirts. She is attracted to many roles. Woman is superb. She requires and deserves a man who can give her a hundred lives, a thousand personalities. She is fortunate indeed if she finds a man who can understand, and satisfy and love the many of her.
