I nodded. ‘Sometimes the secret to winning is knowing when to admit defeat. But you should get some help for how you’ve been feeling—you should go to counselling to help you with your grief and to try and find yourself again too. For your sake and that of our kids, I hope you work through your issues, but you and me, Adrian? We’re done.’

His face fell but not before I saw a flash of anger there. ‘I can’t believe you’re choosing that Dan guy over me, over our children, our family!’

‘I’m not.’ I swallowed the lump in my throat, lifted my chin high and looked him dead in the eye. ‘I’m choosing me.’

Although Adrian and I had broken up months ago, my heart felt heavy as I returned to the room. I might not love him anymore, but we had kids together and I would always care about him, so I really hoped he would get the help he clearly needed.

‘Aw.’ Payton groaned as I prised the iPad off her long enough to help her into her nightie and brush her teeth, but then I gave it back and climbed up beside her on the bed, snuggling in as best I could, considering the moon boot. Soccer videos weren’t usually my viewing of choice, but tonight I was just thankful she was okay, and I could be with her. I never wanted to let her out of my sight again.

When she finally fell asleep, after more soccer videos than I should have allowed, I was spent. Physically and emotionally. What a day! This whole year so far had been one drama after another.

But it hasn’t been all bad.

My heart swelled at the thought of Dan. I had no idea where he was, whether he’d gone back to the Point or found somewhere to stay the night in Perth. But either way, I needed to thank him for looking after me today.

Careful not to disturb Payton, I slid my arm out from under her neck, climbed out of bed and retrieved my mobile from my bag on the floor. There were tons of messages; many from mums of Payton’s classmates who must have heard about her accident and wanted to send us their thoughts, love and prayers. The sentiment warmed my heart, but I couldn’t face replying to any of them right now. There was only one person I wanted to talk to and there also happened to be a number of messages from him:

I’m here if you need me. x

Hope Payton isn’t in too much pain and gets a good night’s sleep. x

I love you. xx
