I narrowed my eyes at him. ‘I know what you did.’
When he still looked blank, I added, ‘How dare you bring some woman into our home and fuck her in our bed during the week you’re supposed to be in charge of our children! Couldn’t you keep it in your pants a few more nights?’
Even then, when I’d been confronted with all the evidence at home, I still hoped he’d give me some kind of reasonable explanation. Ever since Monday I’d been stewing on this, trying to come up with rational reasons, but I hadn’t been able to think of any, and now Adrian offered me no such excuses.
‘She came after the kids went to bed and she was gone before they woke up.’
His words winded me.
‘I don’t care,’ I yelled a second later. ‘That’s against the rules. We were clear when we set up the boundaries—no lovers at the house.’
He looked at me like I was being a hysterical little woman. ‘Sax and Payton had no idea—there’s no harm done.’
‘No harm?!’ My nails curled into my palm—yet if I was honest, it wasn’t really the kids I was worried about. My heart ached at his blatant disregard for my feelings and I could honest to God have murdered him in that moment, but the door opened, and the arrival of the perpetually serene Megan saved his life. For now.
‘Hello, Ashling,’ she said, not exactly smiling as she glanced between us, clearly trying to read the situation. She offered her hand to my husband. ‘You must be Adrian? I’m glad you decided to see me. Come inside.’
As she held the door open, Adrian—ever the gentleman—gestured for me to go in ahead of him. Megan led us into her therapy room, yet even though I’d been there before I felt no comfort in the familiar as I sat down in one of her plush leather armchairs.
She offered us drinks and Adrian requested a flat white with extra milk as if we were in a cafe, then crossed his legs and leaned back in his chair. Every little thing he did infuriated me.
‘No thanks,’ I said, not sure I could trust myself with a hot drink. It was liable to end up all over my husband’s pale blue shirt. ‘I’m good.’
I death-stared at Adrian while Megan retreated to make his coffee. How could you?
‘Calm down, Ash. Take a chill pill.’
‘Don’t tell me to calm down,’ I spat. ‘And a chill pill? What are you? An adolescent? You’ve certainly been acting like a teenager lately, you self-centred arsehole.’
He blinked, clearly shocked by my outburst, but Megan appeared carrying a tray before he found the words to respond.
