Just before midday on Wednesday, I parked my car on the side of the road in Subiaco and rested my head on the steering wheel. Two days since I’d discovered the wineglass and the tissues, and I still didn’t know what my next move should be.
Should I go in or was I fighting a losing battle? Did our marriage really have any chance of survival now, even with Megan’s professional help? And did I still want to save it?
The last two days at home had been like being stuck in a bad movie—I longed to be in Ragged Point where I wasn’t faced with memories from our marriage like I was at home. I hadn’t been able to bring myself to sleep in our bed, so had been spending broken nights on the couch. I’d been living on autopilot since Monday afternoon. Talking to the kids, making their lunches, cooking their dinners, washing their clothes, walking Charlie and cleaning the house, but inside I was a zombie, completely numb.
Twisting my wedding ring on my finger, I climbed out of my car and took a deep breath as I beeped it shut and headed towards Megan’s office. I shivered as I stepped up onto the porch, unsure whether it was the wind or my nerves that were making me cold. Pulling my cardigan tightly around me, I wondered whether to ring the bell or wait for Adrian to arrive.
Hell, maybe he wouldn’t even turn up. That would seal the deal. Like the toss of a coin, if he didn’t show, my marriage was over, but if he did, I owed it to my children to at least follow through on this one session. I owed it to myself to get all the answers I could.
Barely after this thought had entered my head, I heard footsteps behind me and turned to see Adrian walking up the garden path.
I’d always been a peaceful person—avoiding conflict at all costs—but rage reared up inside me at the sight of him and I fought the urge to grab hold of his tie and tighten it until his face turned blue. All I could think about was that nameless woman’s hands sliding all over his body. A body that according to our wedding vows was supposed to be for my pleasure only.
‘Hey Ash,’ he said, clearly oblivious to my rage as he stepped onto the front porch and leaned forward to kiss me on the cheek.
I jumped back out of his way, almost knocking over the massive pot plant that stood on one side of Megan’s door. I couldn’t bear to have his lips on me—who knew where they’d been.
‘Ash?’ He frowned as he reached out a hand to try and help me. ‘What’s wrong?’
Wrong? How could he act so damn normal?
