He nods, lifts his bag, and I stand aside. I watch as he enters my house, and I like him here in my foyer, handsome, sexy, casual. I’m still grinning as I shut the door.
“So what have you been doing, girl?”
“Not much.” And then I reach for him, take his sweatshirt in my hand, and tug him toward me. “Just growing up.”

If you read People magazine, you know celeb couples rarely go the distance and happy-ever-after endings are popular in movies but not in real life.
I do wish People magazine would call me. I’d like to tell them that happy endings are possible and sexy surf instructors really do fall in love with soccer moms.
It’s a year since Kai showed up on my doorstep, and we’re still seeing each other and still very much together, although “together” means sometimes we live apart. He’s still a surf instructor in Hawaii, and I’m still a mom in Seattle, but we have this incredibly hip and implausible lifestyle where we go back and forth between the two.
But we don’t limit our adventures to Hawaii and Seattle. We’ve been taking other trips together, like the Argentina trip last December. Kai went with me for Christmas, and we had the most romantic ten days imaginable. Right now we’re planning another trip for this summer, a Greek island cruise with William and Jessica as soon as they get out of school in June.
My friends—surprise, surprise—all really like Kai. Nic and Kris and Anne find him really easy to talk to, and my kids think he’s beyond cool. As Jessica says, Ashton Kutcher has nothing on Kai Carson. I just laugh and pray she doesn’t repeat that one to her daddy.
Daniel’s still not thrilled with me and my younger guy, but I can’t help that. He has his life to live and I have mine. And eventually Daniel will get used to Kai being in my life, because Kai’s going to be around awhile.
Kai’s talking about a beach wedding in Fiji.
I’m holding out for Greece.
And it’s no real secret that I’d still love just one more baby.
