Frazer flipped her phone in her hands. “Just some friends from university who still like to drink in the middle of the week.”
“Yes.” Cora smirked, a look that was delightful on her. “Because I’ve never seen you do that.”
A bark of laughter from Frazer. Across from her, Cora looked satisfied at the sound. “Nope. I hate alcohol.”
“Sure.”
Silence settled around them.
Frazer stared at her phone. It was much easier than looking at the woman across from her. All the air felt sucked out of the room. The ease that had started to accompany them had already dissipated.
“Frazer.”
She looked up sharply. “Yeah?”
The look on Cora’s face was soft. Slight. “I just wanted to see if you would look at me.”
“I was looking at you before.”
“Not properly.”
“Cora…” Frazer breathed her name out, felt it whisper across her lips.
This time, Cora looked down, and Frazer wondered if that name had felt as heavy to Cora as it had to her.
It filled the room.
“Truth or dare?”
Cora laughed. “What?”
Seriously, Frazer asked again. “Truth or dare?”
“Truth.”
It was easier to meet each other’s eyes when this was what they spoke about. “Um…crap. Should’ve thought of a question first. First kiss?”
“Sean Carbon. Year 9. Behind the bike shed. Yours?”
“Tom Peters. Year 8.”
Cora’s eyebrows raised, and Frazer spoke before she could. “Yes, I kissed boys. Not for long, though.”
Cora chuckled. “Well, you can’t blame me for expecting it to be a girl.”
“No, the girls were six months later.” Frazer winked and Cora snickered. “Your turn.”
“Truth or dare.”
“Truth.” Frazer said with zero hesitation.
“Favourite book?”
“Like… Just one?” Frazer shook her head. “Impossible.”
“Fine—one of your favourite books.”
“What? List a few and miss some out? No way. They’ll feel hurt.”
“Really, Frazer?” Cora was looking at her like she was insane.
“Yes, really.”
“Fine. Book you liked but also liked the movie.”
“Seriously?”
“There has to be one.”
That was not an easy question.
“Oh!” Frazer bounced a little as an answer entered her mind. “Anne of Green Gables.”
Cora made a face. “I didn’t like that book.”
Mouth dropped open, Frazer stared at her. “Are you talking smack about my first love?”
Hands held up, Cora shook her head. “No, no. I was joking. I love them. The books were great.”
“That’s better.”
With her back settled against the wall, Frazer licked her lips and tried to think of another question. Any questions that wasn’t, did you enjoy that night? Do you kind of want to do it again? Why do you have to be married? Are you really sorry?
“Truth or dare?”
Cora grinned. “Truth.” When Frazer rolled her eyes, Cora poked her tongue out. “I’m boring.”
