Aiden made one last-ditch effort. “Where are you meeting Condor? I need to talk to him.” If he could find out where they were meeting, he could snatch the computer from them.
“What about?” No question the kid was suspicious of him.
“It’s about a special sub-folder I found on Harry Owen’s computer. It has all the memos we need to expose the bastard.”
“Condor can find them.”
“Probably. But it will save a lot of time if we work together.”
“The police are looking for you. You’re gonna make us a target.”
Jesus, this kid was way smarter than he looked. “I’m good at hiding. They have no clue where I am. Just tell me where you’re meeting him. I promise you, Condor will be glad you did.”
“I’ll check with Condor. If he gives the okay, I’ll text you.” Joey’s voice cracked, but this time it cracked from determination.
Aiden wasn’t going to get anywhere with the kid. It was time for Plan B. “I know he’ll wanna meet me.”
“Gotta run,” Joey said and hung up.
Aiden stared at his phone. He couldn’t believe the kid had hung up on him.
The afternoon air had thickened in the sun. There was no breeze to cut through the heat. His stomach growled.
Screw it. He needed to get some water. Some nice A/C. And a burger with fries. He texted Tr0lz: I’m going to mall. Meet me there. Then he put his laptop into his backpack, hiked it onto his shoulder and began the long walk along the tracks toward the shopping mall. The sun beat down on his head.
But Aiden knew all of the discomforts and indignities of the past few years were about to be wiped out.
Along with Harry Owen.
And his father.

Chapter 29
3:16 p.m.
Kate spun away from the parkade, and strode toward the hospital doors, fumbling for her phone.
Randall, tellingly, was still on her speed dial. He answered on the first ring.
“Randall, it’s Kate.” She kept her tone professional. She didn’t want him to think she had any other reason to call. “I just saw your client entering the hospital.” She stood in the foyer, scanning the lobby.
No sign of Mel Owen.
“Which client?”
Dammit. Mel Owen must have already gotten into the elevator.
“Is it Mel or Harry?” Randall asked.
She found the stairwell and began to sprint up the stairs. “Mel.”
“Is he okay?”
“Yes, no, I mean I think he’s here to see Leah.”
“I’m on my way.”
Kate flung open the stairwell door and punched the intercom to the ICU. “It’s Leah Roberts’ lawyer. Please let me in.” The door buzzed, and she strode into the ICU.
