He scrolled through his contacts until he found the number for Joey Roberts. After two rings, the kid answered, his voice wary. “Hello?”

“Joey.” Aiden cleared his throat. It was so dry, he sounded like a frog. “It’s Aiden.”

There was a sharp inhale. “You left my sister to die!”

“No, it wasn’t like that. Didn’t Leah tell you?” He needed to know what she had told her family and the police.

“She’s barely conscious.”

“But the police arrested her.”

“She woke up, but she can’t speak very well.”

Relief rushed through him. If she couldn’t speak, then neither Joey nor the police would know what really went down. “I didn’t leave Leah to die. I thought she was right on my heels, but then she dropped something and ran back in before I could stop her.”

“Didn’t you hear the gun?”

“No. The police had a dog chasing me. You know dogs scare the shit out of me.”

Joey’s voice lost a bit of its hardness. “She almost didn’t make it. She’s got tubes stuck all over her.”

That was good. Tubes meant she was in bad shape.

“Has she said anything to the police?”

“No. Just to her lawyer.”

“Her lawyer?” Shit. He hadn’t thought of that. “Who’s her lawyer?”

“Someone named Kate Lange. She keeps coming to the hospital to check on Leah. I’m hoping Leah won’t say anything until after Condor comes.”

He froze. “Condor’s coming? All the way from the US?”

“Yeah.” Joey’s voice lowered. “He wants the data on Leah’s laptop.”

“Why?”

“Because he wants to make sure that everything Leah went through was worth it.”

If Condor posted the contents of Harry’s computer onto the Internet before Harry paid the half million, then Aiden would get nothing. And he’d be back relying on Tr0lz for his measly handouts. “But I’ve got it covered. I’m gonna doxx Harry Owen tonight.”

“Condor said that if we left the laptop for the police to find, it would incriminate her.”

“Where is it now?”

“I took it.” Joey whispered the admission, as if he couldn’t quite believe he did it.

Aiden couldn’t quite believe it, either. The kid had more balls than he gave him credit. It also meant that Condor would find all the files that Aiden had uncovered. And Condor would doxx Harry mercilessly.

Aiden’s blackmail would be dead in the water if he didn’t stop Condor from getting the files until after Harry paid up. “Where’s her laptop? I’m in a safe place. I can look after it for you.”

Joey’s voice became wary. “It’s taken care of. Look I gotta go, someone’s coming—”
