Harry Owen’s entire computer drive revealed itself. It would take hours, if not days, to go through it. He skimmed through it, noting the subfolder of private memos where Harry had filed the most incriminating files about the data breach.
Not only did Aiden have all of Harry Owen’s data on his computer, he had uploaded a key logging program onto Harry Owen’s laptop so he could capture Harry’s passwords. Emails always revealed more than they intended, and often had juicy file attachments. He was sure that for a man in Harry Owen’s position, he would have at least one private email address in addition to his official email.
There were two passwords that Harry had entered since the break-in last night. One was for his work email.
The other was for a private email account.
“Holy crap, Harry Owen, you are one sneaky bastard.”
His heart began to pound.
The first email account held emails that Harry Owen had forwarded from the Minister of Public Safety, detailing the nature of the data breach, the demand that no one discuss it, and the strategy for covering up the breach. Harry Owen must have sent the emails to himself as a little insurance in case the whole thing blew up politically.
Smart guy. Aiden had to give him credit. He knew how to cover his ass.
But then he logged into the other account. And he couldn’t believe how stupid Harry Owen was.
He was having an affair. With a US Captain.
Harry had written just last week: I wish we could be together, in public, without fear of the consequences. I wish we had met before you had your kids. I know that you don’t want to break up your marriage. But all I can do is think about you. And how our life could be together. I can’t wait to see you this weekend.
Aiden took a screen shot of the email.
Then he texted it to Harry with his own message: Look what I found, lover boy. For $500,000, this will stay between us.
He hit ‘send’.
Then he leaned back against the concrete balustrade supporting the railway bridge and closed his eyes.
It had been a very busy day so far.
But a very rewarding one.

Chapter 23
1:40 p.m.
Kate spotted the van for a local television news show as she hurried toward the main entrance of the Greater Halifax General Hospital. So Nat was here. She hadn’t seen Nat since before her trip to Italy. Kate grinned. They had a lot of catching up to do.
She strode into the main lobby, taking the stairs up to the fifth floor. She pressed the buzzer to the Medical Surgical ICU.
“Can I help you?” a clerk asked over the intercom. “This is a restricted floor.”
“I’m the lawyer for Ms. Roberts,” Kate said. “May I come in?”
The door buzzed.
