She eyed her client. Leah appeared exhausted. “The Crown will want you to testify against him if they grant you immunity. Are you willing to do that? It means you will have to face him in court.”

“Nothing would give me more pleasure.” The last word came out slurred.

“Get some sleep,” Kate said. “I’ll let you know if the Crown calls tonight.”

“Thank you. You don’t know what a difference you’ve made.” Leah’s eyes drifted closed.

It was the first time a client had said that to her.

Her phone chimed with a new text message as she entered the hospital lobby.

I’m picking up supper, Eddie announced. What’s your poison? He added a skull and crossbones emoji.

It wasn’t easy to type with one hand. She pecked: I would love salad and falafel.

“Kate.”

Randall rose from a seat in the waiting area, falling into step beside her. “Let me drive you home.” He had removed his tie, the top button of his white shirt unbuttoned.

She became aware of the rise and fall of his chest under his pale grey suit, the warm breath passing his lips, the hint of burnished stubble along his jaw.

Resist, Kate. Resist. “What about your car?”

“I’ll send Nick to get it. He just got his driver’s license.” Randall’s voice was tinged with pride.

Kate felt a pang at his words. For a brief time, her life and Randall’s had become entwined during his criminal case. It had been torn asunder in the aftermath. But life in Randall’s household had moved on without her.

Her hand throbbed.

Her heart throbbed.

He was pulling her in, just like he always did. “Thanks, but I can still use this hand to drive.” She wiggled her fingers. “See?”

His phone chimed. “Sorry—” he glanced down at it. “It’s Lucy. She needs me to pick her up now.” He gave her a smile that was too full of tenderness. Why did he have to be so tender? It was making it so hard. “Are you sure I can’t drop you off on my way?”

She shook her head. “No. Thanks.” She pulled her phone out of her pocket. “I just need to check my messages.” It was the only thing she could think of to end this awkward conversation. She knew without a doubt that if she walked with him to the parkade, she would end up in his car, and God only knew where that would lead.

“Of course.” She glimpsed hurt in his eyes. “Have a good weekend.”

“You, too. Give my best to Lucy.”

Please go. Before I change my mind.

He seemed to read her mind, because he turned on his heel and walked through the sliding doors.

Kate wished that her heart had a set of sliding doors that would close as smoothly and surely on Randall’s retreating back.
