“Of course we can,” Pierce said, “Think about it, Daisy. We film in pitch blackness in some very scary places. How could Skye or I leave you alone with that obsessed freak? He’s gone too far.”
“You’re right, you’re right.”
The hours passed slowly, but Daisy made sure she texted her granny often, just to keep her mind at ease. Daisy looked at her watch. They should be at Kings Cross in twenty minutes, so Daisy stood and got her holdall from the shelf above.
“I don’t know about you two,” Pierce said, “but I’m going home to a takeaway and my bed.”
“I promised I’d stay the night at the Debreks’. They wanted to make sure everything went all right when I was away.”
Skye narrowed her eyes. “I suppose a banking billionaire has lots of enemies, but ones who would attack their friends?”
Daisy was getting caught up in lie after lie, and she hated it. “So they tell me.”
Luckily Pierce changed the subject. “What’s Amelia’s house like?”
A safe subject. This was good. “It’s stunning, now that Amelia has decorated. I mean, before it looked like your classic haunted house.”
“Oh, has your spidey sense detected any paranormal activity?” Pierce asked.
More lies. “Not that I’ve noticed. Anyway, when Amelia decorated the house it became a warm family home. Beautiful white walls with gold trim, and cornices, chandeliers. She’s really brought the house back to what it would have looked like a century ago, but with some nice modern touches. There’s a cinema room, and Amelia has her own meditation room. Gorgeous.”
Skye smiled. “It must be fun spending a billionaire’s money.”
“You’re not wrong,” Pierce said. “I need to find myself a billionaire. I could be a wonderful trophy husband.”
Daisy laughed. “Shut up, you numpty.”
“Oh, I do love your quaint Scottish words.”
“Shall I hit him?” Skye asked jokingly.
“Please do,” Daisy replied.
Thankfully the train was finally pulling into the station. It was a long journey, but she had learned so much from Angele’s notebook. She really wished she could go home and immerse herself in it again, but Amelia wanted to have the night together, to catch up, and Byron and Alexis wanted to debrief Owen and Trista.
The train pulled in, and her two guards took the bags out of her hands.
“Hey, you don’t have to—” But they were off, out the train door.
Syke nudged her. “Don’t knock it, babe. I’d love to have two strapping people like that to look after me.”
Daisy felt a little guilty. Syke, Pierce, and Zane had joined her to find out the truth about paranormal stories, but little did they know that two vampires were on this trip with them the whole time. It felt like lying to her friends, but she was doing it to protect Amelia and Byron, and their world.
