“She needs you, Daisy. It’s your destiny. It was always meant to be you.”
“What? Why?”
“I was there to support her when she needed it, but you were always meant to be the one who brings her terror to an end.”
“She’s a vicious monster, Angele. Have you seen what she’s done?”
“Of course I have. Why do you think I wrote Monsters are made, not born? Gilbert thought he’d destroyed all the light in her, but it’s there. I see it, Lucia her grandmother saw it, and you have to find it, Daisy.”
“She doesn’t deserve a second chance.”
“Does the May Queen forgive the Horned God? He changes into the Green Man.”
Suddenly Daisy was pulled from her vision. Skye and Trista were standing above her.
“Are you okay, Daisy? We were worried about you,” Skye said.
Daisy scrunched her eyes shut then opened them again. It was hard to go from the vision back to the real world so quickly.
“Yeah, sorry. I just wanted to be away from Zane. He touched my thigh and pushed his body into mine at the table.”
“He did what?” Skye’s face went red with anger.
Uh-oh. Skye was going to go mental at him. Trista, behind her, didn’t look too happy about it either.
“It’s okay, Skye. Don’t make a fuss.”
“Don’t make a fuss? Women have been saying that for generations. No, he’s gone too far. We’ve all made so many excuses for him, but this is too much. Come on, Trista. You can back me up.”
As they stormed off, Daisy sighed and shook her head. Zane had to sit with them for hours till they got back to London.
The words Angele had said echoed through her mind. Does the May Queen forgive the Horned God? That was a big part of the Fire Festival. In her research she learned that the Celts believed that the May Queen forgave the Horned God for his sins, and he became the Green Man, ushering in a new season, a new start. Was that what Angele meant?
She gave it ten minutes and went back through to the carriage, clutching her precious notebook. Daisy found Zane, sitting, arms folded, a few booths away, clearly unhappy, next to Owen and Trista. Skye patted the seat next to her and said, “It’s all sorted. Sit with me and Pierce. Owen and Trista are keeping an eye on Zane.”
“He wasn’t too upset, was he?” Daisy asked.
“It doesn’t matter if he was. You’re being too soft on him,” Pierce said.
“We’ve still got to work together as Monster Hunters.”
Skye pursed her lips. “I’ve a feeling he’ll be resigning from our group.”
Daisy rubbed her forehead. She felt like she’d left half her mind back in her vision. “Can we manage as a three?”
