- About the Author
Bruno is about the same height as Anna, and judging by his complexion and the way he is moving, he is pretty drunk. Anna goes straight for him, gripping his chin and upper arm. While he is busy trying to twist his face free, she kicks his legs out from under hm. Bruno crashes to the floor; she doesn’t wait to see how he reacts, but throws herself at Alex instead. The DJ’s body has gone limp, but Alex still hasn’t loosened his hold. She grabs his hair and face and yanks him backwards. Alex lets go of the DJ, but instead of giving in he whirls around, pushes his arm under her shoulder and wrestles her to the floor. He is almost six feet tall and weighs over fifteen stone. He used to be an elite wrestler, so Anna doesn’t have much of a chance. The impact as her knees hit the stage makes her cry out in pain. Her upper body is about to follow, but she resists with all her strength. She can hear him panting above her head. The room begins to spin, sounds and voices and movement combined. You know what to do, Håkan hisses inside her head. Go on – do it!
She jerks her head back and hits Alex squarely on the nose. He groans and his shock enables her to put one foot on the floor, giving her the strength to turn and knee him in the groin. He gurgles, his legs give way and he collapses, both hands clutching the family jewels.
‘You fucking bitch!’ Bruno is on his feet, his face is purple, fists clenched, eyes two narrow slits. He takes a step forward, ready to punch her, and she automatically raises her arm to protect herself. But the blow doesn’t come. Jens Friberg has appeared behind Bruno – in full uniform. Anna sees a black line whizz through the air, she hears a whoosh followed by a crack as Jens’s telescopic baton hits the back of Bruno’s knees, sending him crashing down for the second time.
The main lights come on and the room is bathed in harsh white light. The noise level falls slightly.
‘Here!’ Jens throws her a pair of handcuffs, presumably the spare pair that amused her only a few days ago when she saw him and all his kit for the first time. Jens bends down and cuffs Bruno with his regular pair. Alex Morell has curled up in the foetal position, and has a small pool of blood beneath his nose. Anna meets no resistance as she secures his hands behind his back. She straightens up, brushes the dust off her trousers and turns her attention to the DJ.
He is lying on his back among the wreckage of his equipment. His face is a better colour now. He coughs, rubs his throat and tries to sit up.
‘Are you OK?’ Anna asks, and he nods slowly.
