- about the author
Walking through the foyer and up to our room is a mission and a half with two tents in our pants. We keep laughing and pushing one another through the lobby. Ducking behind each other as soon as a stranger comes into view.
We are a mess, but this is so much fun.
Bursting into our room smiling and giddy as all hell, I shove him through and shut the door behind us.
“Damn, who knew you were so bossy.” Caleb laughs, kicking off his shoes. At some point during the Uber ride, he took my hat and is now sporting it backwards on himself.
We aren’t even drunk off those two drinks, but something about this night has us feeling like we're so high.
“You’ve got to be bossy to handle your ass.” I lean on the door and make sure it’s locked.
“Hm, you’re probably right.” A smile pulls at his lips.
My eyebrows pinch together. “You know what else?” I ask, stripping off my torn shirt and dropping it on the ground. I don’t know why, but a rush of confidence swims over me and I'm going to roll with it.
The Adam’s apple sinks in his throat as I watch it glide back to the top. I bite my lip as I make my way over to him, in the middle of the room. My hand lifts up to feel the column of his throat beneath my thumb. His soft skin feels tremendous and sends a spark throughout my whole body.
“You spend so much time taking care of others, but who takes care of you?” I ask quietly. I mean it every word.
That gets his attention. He stands there, stunned. Honestly, I can’t believe I said them, either.
“What did you just say?” Caleb’s hands come up to grasp around mine as I continue grazing his jawline with my thumbs.
“I asked - who takes care of you?” I look at him deeply now. His eyes dart between mine as he tries to come up with an answer.
“I-I don’t know.” He breathes.
That’s what I thought.
I nod my head slowly, taking his wrist and leading him to the bedroom. I feel an overwhelming need to tell him the truth. Like it’s been bubbling over and finally it’s spilling out.
“I’ve realized something these last few days,” I start. Oh my gosh, someone stop my word vomit. Now.
“And what’s that?” Caleb asks. I give him a gentle shove so he's now sitting on the edge of the bed.
The little alcohol in my system must be giving me the confidence I’ve been needing because all of a sudden I lean down over him, forcing him to lean back on the bed. He stares up at me, shocked as he leans his forearms behind him, propping himself up.
“I want to take care of you, too.” I whisper, looking into his eyes. Being so close, I can see the dark ring of blue around the ocean color of his eyes. It’d put anyone in a trance. I think it put me in a trance years ago. “You deserve someone taking care of you, too.” I clarify. His eyebrows pinch together while he bites his lip, like he’s been dying to hear those words. Using one hand to keep my balance, I use my other to drift softly under his shirt.
