The idea has merit. We could show what Cam and I have going on behind the scenes, and probably a whole lot more effectively than a sad Instagram campaign fronted by an amateur. Not that we owe it to anyone … but it might be just what we need. We’re hopeful that once viewers see the show for what it is, they’ll support us, but we don’t know anything for certain. Not when Lyle still gets the last word.
This might be our chance to get the last word and a whole season of the show.
If nothing else, I could guarantee that thanks to our drama, Lorelai’s song would go viral, and that would be enough for me.
“I have to check with Cam, but it’s a great idea. If you’re sure.”
“Yes, absolutely. Please.”
The following weekend I fly down to Nashville with Lorelai to record my harmony on her song. She stays on to finish the album with the mysterious Craig Boseman, who, if I’m honest, seems halfway in love with her, but also wholly in love with her talent. Apparently, he used to be Drake Colter’s bandmate and songwriting partner, so that’s … plenty loaded. I get the impression Lore isn’t the only one with something to prove via an artful indie comeback. I’m reserving my opinions, however, as I’m hardly one to talk after this last summer.
As expected, Cam loves the idea of the music video. He practically begs to take over the conceptualization after hearing the song. The challenge speaks to his documentary-making sweet spot, and while he says he’s not upset about ending things with National Geographic, I do think he genuinely enjoys putting his vision out there for people to experience. Kind of like building houses, but instead of one family, you’re reaching all the families. At any rate, by the time he finishes drawing up the plans, Lorelai and Craig ask him to work with them on three other songs, assuming the first goes over as well as they hope.
Weird how we started this summer as pop-culture pariahs, you know? Me, having kittens at the mere thought of working with Lyle and slipping back into the spotlight; Cameron, snubbing reality television and trekking the globe, avoiding his past. Avoiding us.
And now look?
Hashtag Spriggs.
