“I know,” she says, her face flushed with a happiness I haven’t seen from her maybe ever. Certainly not in the last year since Drake started reaching out.

“I’m … well. I’m not shocked. At all. I knew it was only a matter of time, but I’m so, so extremely happy for you.”

“Thank you.” She plows on. “So, like I said, I had this idea, after the article. You always talk about how Lyle controls the narrative when it comes to you three and always manipulates things to make himself out to be the fucking hero.”

“It’s exhausting,” I grumble.

“Right. Totally. And you don’t have to say yes, but my friend Craig, he’s not with a label, per se. He’s indie, with a kind of low-key way of doing things. Anyway, it’s obviously been a minute since I had a single, so he said I might want to choose a song and do a music video. Something we could upload online and tease out there, to garner some excitement.”

“Okay. That makes sense.”

“Well, I wrote this song called ‘What They Have,’” she says, her eyes suddenly misty. “Um, inspired by you and Cam, and oh, just, here. I have it on my phone.” She presses Play on the link, and it takes me less than three heartbeats to decide it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.

“Oh, Lore,” I say softly. I’m beyond touched.

“I know, right?” she says, pleased. “I wouldn’t mind a soprano to harmonize if you’re feeling generous.”

“Me?”

She rolls her eyes lightly. “Yeah, you. I’ve heard you belting Sarah Brightman. You’ve aged into your tone and it’s lovely.”

“I’d be honored.”

“Fabulous,” she says quickly, before flashing a wide grin. “But that wasn’t the idea I had. That only came to me as you were humming along just now.”

“I was?”

“Always.” She shakes her head, chuckling. “Anyway, as I said, the song is inspired by you and Cam and how gross you are, so I thought maybe you two could act out your side of the story in a video. If you wanted. You know, maybe hit on the first love and the years apart and then maybe some of the fun B-roll Steve can’t use since you two are always fucking it up with your goofing? I don’t know if that’s legal or whatever, but you get what I mean.”
