“Oh my god, I have to tell her everything.” She closes her eyes and tilts her head to the ceiling, taking a deep breath and maybe muttering a prayer before looking back at me. “What happens in the final act when the hero has to win back their love? They make a grand gesture! Jasper did his, linking himself to you forever through your photography, even if he can’t have you.” I swear, she swoons talking about it. “Now you have to come up with something so that we can make up with Jasper and live happily ever after with him forever.”

“We?” I ask.

“Fine, you. Whatever.” She rolls her eyes like I’m the one being ridiculous. “But you know I’m going to be right there with you. So what do you say, do we forgive him or not?”

She clasps her hands together and looks at me with her giant puppy-dog eyes. I’m half-convinced she’s going to drop to her knees soon and start begging.

And how can I say no to that?

I can’t.

“Fine.” I try to sound a little put out by all of this when really I want to bust out into cartwheels and squeal like a little girl at whatever boy-band concert is hot at the moment. “I guess we forgive him.”

“Finally!” She punches the air above her and I’m concerned that her face may crack in half with how giant her smile is. “Time to come up with the perfect grand gesture.”

—

“Are you sure this is going to work?” I ask Elsie and Daisy for what feels like the millionth time.

“Yes!” they both shout back at me.

Maybe I have asked it a million times.

“Seriously.” Elsie finger-twists the curls on the back of my head. “You need to relax. This is going to be amazing.”

“But is it grand enough? I’m not sure it’s grand enough.”

I mean really, who do I think I am? How can I do a grand gesture to a man who literally makes a living dreaming them up?

“The fact that it’s you makes it grand.” Daisy uses the lipstick applicator to apply one final layer of lipstick before she takes a step back to admire her work. “It doesn’t matter what you do. It’s not the scale that makes the gesture grand; it’s the motive and the meaning behind it that make it special.”

“Okay, but are—”

“Yes,” Elsie cuts me off. “We’re sure.”

“You know you’re very rude for someone who has pretty much forced me into this situation.” I glare at her and she smirks at me in the mirror as she finishes up with my hair.
