A creak in the hallway had Deven freezing afraid to turn around. Oh shit, she hadn’t even heard Erika return. She stayed still, hovering over the open box. Her back was to the door. Any minute now, Erika would catch her, and she would have to figure out how the hell she was going to get out of this mess. Another step, and then another. The person was moving slow and meticulous, her boots thudding against the polished hall hardwood. Deven placed the diary on top and rose, debating if she had time to dive into the closet. That’s when the shadow entered the room. Deven’s eyes lifted to the woman. She blinked and let out a strangled breath at the sight of the gun. But more than that, who the gun was attached to from across the room. Her legs went limp, and she struggled to speak but no words came out.
“Hey Sis,” Kennedy greeted with a wink. “I see it’s time to have a little chat.”

“Oh don’t stop on my account,” Kennedy invited, using the gun to gesture to the open box. “Erika told me you had been following her, so I knew it was only a matter of time before you got bold enough to come snooping for yourself.”
Deven moved slow, her eyes frozen on the gun in Kennedy’s hand. She watched the finger on the trigger for any kind of subtle movement. Hell, she was afraid if she even breathed too hard it would set the gun off.
Kennedy noticed her stare and chuckled to herself. “Oh, don’t worry, Sis. This is just for protection. I’m not going to shoot you.” As if to prove her point, she waved the gun in the air like it was a flag before putting it in the waist of the back of her jeans. “See?” She held up her hands, palms out to display their emptiness. “No gun. Now will you relax?”
Her putting away the gun didn’t make Deven feel any better. But it was her fear of disobeying that had her easing back to the floor to take a seat at Kennedy’s insistence. At this point, she didn’t know what she was capable of.
Kennedy sat across from her and crossed her legs as if she were making casual conversation. “So, I heard you’ve been looking for me,” she started with a gloat in her eyes. “I’m flattered. I told you once, you were a fixer, didn’t I? And look at you. Just had to fix this too, instead of leaving well enough alone.”
Really? Was that all she had to say? Deven had to bite her tongue to hold her anger at bay. “Kennedy, what the hell is going on?”
She shrugged. “You tell me. You’re the one that’s been doing all the digging. What have you found out?”
