Kennedy shrugged. “I don’t know. I thought that was kind of weird too.”
“Yeah, pretty weird.” Deven agreed with a frown. It crossed her mind to ask her what the two of them had been discussing before she walked up. But she had a feeling the answer would be just as elusive.

“She robbed me!”
Deven steered with one hand and used the other to pull the phone from her face. No way was she talking to who she thought she was talking to. Not with that attitude. But sure enough, Paul’s name was shown on her screen, along with the timer indicating his impromptu call only twenty-three seconds prior. And even more puzzling was the fact that he was referencing Kennedy.
“Paul, wait a minute. What are you talking about? What did she steal?”
“I knew it was too damn good to be true,” he continued with his rant. “Things were going too perfect.”
“Paul, please calm down. And start from the beginning.”
“I need to show you some stuff I found,” he said. “Where are you?”
Deven took the off-ramp of the expressway, her eyes dancing between the signs and the GPS map displayed on her navigation system. Twelve minutes away. “I’m headed to that address you gave me,” she admitted. “Amber’s address.”
“I told you the last time I checked the place was for rent.”
“I know. I figured I could talk to the landlord or some neighbors or something.”
Paul was quiet as he considered the alternatives. “I’ll meet you over there,” he said quickly. “On my way.” And he hung up.
Deven placed her phone in her cup holder. Whatever Paul was about to show her, she had already surmised was about to be some real implicating facts. She turned her attention to the road ahead and focused on her journey.
It had been a pure whim to get up that morning and make a trip to the address Paul had given her for Amber. After leaving the police station the previous day, Deven had toyed with the idea. It felt like a shot in the dark. And what did she expect to find anyway? Kennedy would waltz out the front door and admit to all her wrongdoings? Hey Sis, yeah, it’s me. I’m not really dead and oh yeah, I gave Paul a fake name so I could rob him. Oops. That would be an answer that solved absolutely nothing.
