She really expected Deven to spell it out? Fine. She could entertain her. “First off, there’s a woman in the morgue they’re saying is you. And then you’re missing for weeks, and I find out about all your little scams, so I see you’re on the run.”
That had a chuckle escaping Kennedy’s lips and she covered her mouth in a mock apology.
“You robbed Paul and a whole bunch of other people and now you’re just acting like all this shit is okay.”
Kennedy’s eyes lit in amusement. “Oh wow. I see you’ve been busy,” she teased.
“How can you just sit there and pretend like you’re not a con artist?”
“Oh, I’m not pretending anything. I am most definitely a con artist. And damn good at it too.”
Deven was stunned silent. Part of her expected this to be some kind of twisted joke. But the only one who seemed to find humor in this mess was Kennedy. It was appalling and infuriating all at once. “I can’t believe you,” Deven said shaking her head. “Why Kennedy? Robbing people? Stealing identities? All this illegal shit? This isn’t you.”
Kennedy rolled her eyes and glanced away. “You don’t even know me,” she mumbled.
“What are you talking about? You’re my sister. I love you.”
“You have no idea what we went through at Keith’s house,” she snapped. “No fucking idea. Because no, you were too busy trying to be an only child that you didn’t give a damn what happened to your sister.”
Deven opened her mouth, wanted so badly to refute that belief, but she couldn’t bring herself to say it. “I love you,” she insisted again instead. “I’ve always wanted what’s best for you.”
“No, you’ve always wanted what’s best for YOU, Deven.” Tears clogged Kennedy’s throat, but her voice remained clear and firm with assurance. “But it’s okay. It took a while, but you’ve been forgiven.”
Something was off. Something Deven couldn’t quite place. Maybe it was the look in her eyes or her hands, folded steady in her lap. “Keith wasn’t a bad dad at first,” she started, her gaze now in a faraway place. “I actually loved him. No, the real problem was Iris. She wanted to have her cake and eat it too. Shit was unfair.” She seemed to be rambling now, though about what, Deven couldn’t be sure. But she did know better than to interrupt. “So, you went to see Keith, huh? Did he give you the answers you were looking for?”
“No, he told me to find Erika and she would have the answers.”
Kennedy turned up her lips. “Ah, I see. So, he found another way to defer his mess onto someone else instead of addressing it. You know, for a big strong criminal, he can sure be a bitch.”
