While I spent more nights at Elliott’s place than at my own, some things did not change. On Thursdays, like clockwork, Reggie, Elle, and I would get together at the restaurant at our usual table that Elliott reserved for us, and we would catch up, eat, and laugh. Every piece of my life was finally in order. My professional life was going well, my personal life with Elliott was off the charts, and finally, thanks to these two wonderful women, I had secured a comfortable place of my own in Lady World.
The indefatigable Penny Prichard was a force of nature. We met the first time for coffee at a Midtown restaurant close to a client.
She arrived a few minutes late, weighed down by a tote on each arm and several notebooks poking their heads out of her purse. She was not what I had pictured at all. I pictured her with her hair in a clever blonde bob freshly done at Bergdorf. I pictured her in red heels. Instead, besides smothered in all her professional wares, her dark hair had been blown around by the winds, and she wore black pants and a loose gray, comfortable-looking sweater. She schlepped in. I loved her immediately, although she talked a mile a minute.
“Oh, honey, sorry I’m late. A client delayed me. We were discussing the differences between the color beige and café au lait. Give me a break. Waiter? I could eat something. Could you eat something?”
After the initial whirlwind of her arrival, we settled into a relaxed conversation.
“I am so glad we could get together, Bailey. I’ve been intrigued by you from the moment I met Elliott and saw the restaurant. My curiosity was heightened, I must tell you, after I heard that man talk about you. I have never been jealous over a woman in my life. To have a man speak so openly about his affection for you must feel incredible. I was going through a pretty shitty divorce, so it just made me want to be around you both.” Now I was intrigued about what Elliott had told Penny about me.
“The feeling was entirely mutual. After I saw Elliott’s apartment, I was incredibly jealous of you, Penny. It was so impressive. I really want to pick your brain.”
