He pulled out a sheet of paper. “I took the liberty of asking three different contractors to bid on this job. I studied them myself. They are fair bids. I remember how you bargained like hell at those vintage shops back in high school. I would be willing to say you could knock off about twenty percent if you negotiate well.”

“This would be a high-profile gig for any of those guys. But I will reserve opinions until I take your advice and see it in motion. How long would something like this take? How long would we need to be closed? That is a lot of revenue for everyone to consider.”

“That’s where the negotiation comes in, Bailey. Everywhere I have been this week, there have been reported sightings of you. I’m almost as intrigued by what you have been up to as you are about these plans.” Dexter picked up his wine, and we toasted to our collaboration. I heard Griffin approaching, and I turned the prices over and rolled up Dexter’s plan.

“It looks like you two have been busy,” Griffin said and shook Dexter’s hand. I could tell they liked each other.

“The risotto is divine,” Dexter said, then kissed my cheek. “Will be in touch.”

“Bye, Dexter. Happy Valentine’s to you and Mark,” I said.

“Nice flowers,” Griffin said.

“No worries. They’re from my girls. Are you jealous?” I poked him in the ribs.

“Considering Dexter is gay and the court has ordered a kibosh on your cohabitation antics, I’m good. By the way, I’m taking the night after tomorrow off.”

“That’s Valentine’s Day, Griffin. Another important day for a mixologist. Do you think I’m going to completely crumble if I see couples kissing, spontaneous engagements, planned engagements, or serious PDA? I would rather see that than warring parties in a divorce proceeding. Besides, I have lots of work to do. I plan to be right here sitting at the bar in the middle of things working.”

“Valentine’s Day can be brutal, Bae.” Griffin held my glance. I linked my hand in his to express my thanks for his consideration, knowing he had to endure Valentine’s Day last year.

“I need to head out to this florist who is going out of business on the other side of town. Some vases there caught my eye. If I’m not back by tomorrow morning, send the search party.”

“Not funny.”
