‘I’m afraid so. Last night and this morning, I’ve been trying to unearth as much information as I could regarding Adam Campbell and Alexandra Greene. In the process, I came across one of Gabriel’s electronic files labeled “D.P.,” and when I clicked on it, several photos and articles came up.’ A heavy sigh came over the line. ‘I’ve got a name and an address for someone I think you’re going to want to talk to.’
For the next few minutes, Hal filled them in on what he’d discovered, and just as he’d been stunned with Alyssa and Cord’s news, they were with his. It was all starting to make sense.
At the next intersection, Alyssa flipped the car around and headed east on I-40 on their way to Cedar Crest. After hanging up, Hal had forwarded several links to her phone, so with luck, the person they were racing to see would help put the final piece of the puzzle in place.
Chapter Fifty-Four
Thursday, October 10
The DJ on the radio droned on and on about Addis and Emerson’s miraculous escape from their mad captor, how they’d used a stupid piece of broken glass to help loosen their ropes, and the more he lauded their heroism, the more fiercely Alex fought the urge to turn the car around and head to the hospital where they would remain under observation for at least another twenty-four hours.
Her world had suddenly turned into the graviton ride at the state fair, except instead of staying safely glued to the side, she was being sucked down into the vortex with no hope of clawing her way out.
When she reached her house, she crawled into the attic and dragged out several large trunks and suitcases. Next, she went to her bedroom to retrieve her treasured assault rifle, the one she only used for target practice – on unsuspecting animals – out in the middle of nowhere. But tonight, it would be her insurance policy. She would not be cornered or captured, but if she was, she’d make widows, widowers, and orphans out of as many people as she could, and she’d do it laughing the entire way.
But first, she needed to finish what she’d started, what she should’ve done seven years ago after she’d killed Hayden. This time, she’d make sure Elizabeth Monroe did not survive the night. And neither would her son. The anticipation of getting the precious ‘Beck’ to cower and beg for her son’s life filled her with excitement and adrenaline.
Just a few more hours, and it would all be over.
