Alyssa smiled. ‘Your son is very protective of his mom and is doing quite well, all things considered. I understand Rosalyn offered to take him until you were fully recovered and out of the hospital, but after she and Tessa spoke, the two of them decided Brandon would be more comfortable staying with his best friend and closer to home. The last time I checked in, the boys were busy drawing you get well cards and planning their futures as superheroes or cops. Apparently, there was a pretty lively debate on whether or not they were allowed to do both or had to choose one over the other.’ A warm tug pulled at Alyssa’s heart, picturing Brandon’s passion for superheroes.

Elizabeth’s grin came off as more of a grimace. ‘Tessa did tell me that when she called.’ With a loving, indulgent chuckle, she pointed to several drawings propped on the windowsill. ‘She dropped those off when I was still in a coma. Superheroes and cops are probably a safer bet because I don’t think either of them are quite ready to be enrolled in art school just yet.’

Where she was smiling seconds ago, tears now filled Elizabeth’s eyes. ‘His father would’ve been so proud.’ Then sobering again, she said, ‘There’s been lots of talk that you rescued Gabriel Kensington’s daughter and her friend. Is it true they actually escaped first? Or are you not allowed to tell me?’

‘It’s been on the news, so I can tell you at least that much. They were being held in a crawl space in a cabin up in the Pecos. They managed to get loose and escape, and as they were hiding, they found what they decided later was their good luck charm.’ Alyssa wasn’t sure why she did it, but she pulled out the pocketknife she’d placed in an evidence baggie and dangled it in front of Elizabeth’s face so she could see.

It took several seconds for her to realize Elizabeth was no longer listening. Her gaze was locked on the pocketknife, but before Alyssa could ask what was wrong, Elizabeth’s eyes rolled back in her head, and the alarms in her room started blaring.

Chapter Fifty-Three

Thursday, October 10

Alyssa was two steps behind Cord as they raced out of the hospital, but that was only because she was trying to place a call at the same time. It rang four times before going to voicemail. Again. Panting less from exertion than tension, she fought the desire to hurl her phone against one of the concrete pillars as she passed, for no other reason than to release some of the blistering rage stirring in her gut.
