To this day, she still wasn’t sure if she’d picked up that shovel with the intention of killing him, but her intent didn’t matter because once the metal hit his skull, she couldn’t be stopped until his chest no longer rose and fell. And he definitely hadn’t been talking anymore, so she’d succeeded in her goal.
After she’d killed him, she’d driven his car into the old barn and then dragged his body over and wrestled him into his trunk. Then, she’d grabbed a hose from outside and cleaned up the mess before moving inside and taking a shower. Hours later, Rosalyn Benson had called to see if she’d seen her brother, and Alex assured her she had not and suggested trying Elizabeth. Later that night, the police had stopped by, and she’d repeated the same story.
It had taken planning and patience, but later, she’d managed to rid herself of all evidence that Hayden had ever been to her house. If only freeing her mind of him had been as easy—
Lights and voices effectively snapped Alex back, and for several seconds, she had to fight to get her breathing back under control as her heart knocked against her ribs.
A zinging pain shot up her arm, and she glanced down, realizing she’d clenched her hands into such tight fists that her fingernails had dug through her skin. Opening her palms, she wiped them on her pants and looked around. It was time to stop living in the past and concentrate on why she was here – to kill the girls, wherever they were and whatever it took.
Chapter Forty-Eight
Wednesday, October 9
The hike back to Tony’s truck had been rife with tension, primarily because Addis couldn’t be swayed from the belief that they were being followed, that the three of them weren’t out there alone. Each snap of a twig convinced her they were currently being stalked. She’d even persuaded herself that the soft breeze blowing across her face was actually their kidnapper breathing against her cheek. Not even when she, Emerson, and Tony were safely locked inside his truck did she let down her guard, scooting over as far from the passenger window as she could, even though it meant crowding Emerson, who didn’t seem to mind as she wrapped her arm around Addis’s shoulder.
