‘Tony, the guy is Adam Campbell.’ Alyssa didn’t blink as she watched for Tony’s reaction.
He took two stumbling steps back, shaking his head. ‘Adam Campbell, the Lobo football player half the NFL teams want? The same Adam that I helped—’ His eyes widened as understanding dawned. ‘That I helped coach.’ One hand wiped down his face, and then he whirled around and kicked his booted foot into his wheel well. ‘Damn it! Shit. Damn it. Sonofa—’ His final curse turned to a howl of frustration.
When his rage simmered to a more manageable level, he directed an unwavering scowl at Alyssa. ‘It’s beginning to make more sense. Because I helped coach Adam Campbell once long ago, and then I take a little time off to get my head together because I’ve got a lot of personal shit going on in my life, things none of you know—’
‘Whose fault is that?’ Alyssa interrupted.
‘That’s not the point. I had nothing to do with whatever this is. You’ll either have to trust me or send me on my way. Or hell, arrest me if you need to. But I can help you find this cabin.’
For several seconds, Alyssa regarded her teammate before confronting him with the one question she had to have answered. ‘What about the photographs from the sex trafficking case that have been delivered to Holly, along with threatening notes?’
There was no way Tony could fake the color that drained from his face. He had no idea what she was talking about.
That he was incredibly hurt that she could ever suspect he’d harm or target her family, especially one of her children, was evident in the way his voice broke when he asked, ‘What are you talking about, Alyssa? What photographs, and what threatening notes? Is Holly okay?’
She didn’t get a chance to answer because, having finished outlining instructions to Joe, Cord walked up. ‘Are we ready to roll out?’ When no one answered, Cord touched Alyssa’s arm, asking in a tightly controlled voice while shifting his gaze over to Tony. ‘Lys? What’s going on?’
Tony stared at her, one eyebrow lifted in question. The move was hers. Her answer was to open the back door of Tony’s truck, leaving the front passenger seat open for Cord, since his legs were so much longer than hers. ‘Let’s do this.’
Through a cloud of red, Alex scrambled to adjust as her entire plan crumbled before her eyes. For a moment, she considered cutting off the vehicle carrying those stupid girls down the mountain, but then it would be her against a virtual army, and she knew she couldn’t kill them all before she was killed.
No, she would have to regroup. Wait. Maybe it was time to send more images to Holly Wyatt. Or maybe more drastic measures needed to be taken.
