Hal’s smile gave him a childish, cherubic appearance. But then he became serious again. ‘You know I’m kidding, but Cord gave us a brief rundown on what’s going on with that girl of yours, and I know you’ll tell us more when you can, but for now I want to remind you that Brock, Holly, and Isaac aren’t your only family. Don’t shut us out.’
Embarrassingly, tears clouded her vision and threatened to spill over. Thankfully, she was saved from making a complete fool of herself by Joe’s announcement as he hung up and sprang to his feet.
‘This is it, folks, our first real break. Bad news first: Hedge was able to lift a fingerprint from Addis Kensington’s phone, but as we expected, it turns out it belonged to her, so no help there. However, the good news is that the bullets retrieved from the scene were traced back to a twenty-two caliber Glock 19.’ Joe was practically bouncing up and down. ‘Are you ready for this? Of course, you are. The weapon used to kill Lydia Kensington and incapacitate Gabriel is registered to one Alexander Greene of Creede, Colorado.’
Instantly, an excited energy buzzed around the room.
‘Did you say Alexan-der Greene?’ Cord asked.
‘Indeed, I did.’ Joe’s grin was contagious.
Hal and Sandra wore identical expressions of disbelief. Alyssa locked eyes with Cord before the two of them bolted out the door in search of Captain Hammond. Her impatience was palpable as she waited for the captain to wrap up the call he was on. It took a Herculean effort not to jerk the receiver from his ear and slam it down. Wise man that he was, he sensed their news was more urgent than his phone call and hung up with a barked, ‘What?’
‘We have a promising lead, but we’re going to need your approval for a road trip.’ Alyssa explained what Joe had learned.
When she finished, Hammond studied Cord. ‘Do you feel comfortable heading out of the state with all that’s going on with Sara? Because if you don’t, I’ll tag Joe or Sandra to accompany Alyssa.’
‘I appreciate it, Captain, but one of Sara’s friends, another nurse, is staying with us now, so I should be good to go.’
