Gabriela changed the shopping game for all those fashion-phobic men. Acting as their beautiful and stylish surrogate wife while they were in the store, she selected and recommended a shirt with a jacket, and then matched it with a belt, and a pair of pants or two. She turned her male customer’s shopping experience into a happy though expensive occasion—one they wanted to repeat again and again. The better they felt, the more they’d spend and the more commission Gabriela would make. After the men were sufficiently mesmerized, she’d insist their new outfit would look great with a particular pair of expensive Italian shoes that happened to be on sale that same day. After a little cajoling and a healthy smattering of compliments, the men would usually buy the shoes in two colors.
When a male client came out of the dressing room to model a sweater or suit for her discerning eye, she’d beam at him approvingly, saying things like “You look like you stepped out of the pages of GQ. That color is wonderful against your complexion.” Then, she’d look deeply into his eyes and hold his gaze for a very long time, saying nothing. After the unspoken exchange, she would own him. When the shopping spree was over, the man would pull out his plastic and pay whatever it cost to impress her. It worked almost every time and Gabriela made a bundle. Her commissions gave her that extra money to buy the expensive things she craved and put a little aside in a secret bank account.
After a few years of marriage, Greg proved to be a huge disappointment on every count, sexually, personally and financially. During the first six months of their marriage, Greg appeared elated at having such a pretty wife and congratulated himself on his good fortune. In a short amount of time, though, his attention reverted back to his computer and online gaming which soon took priority over his new bride. Greg also hadn’t been completely honest with Gabriela about his financial situation, having led her to believe that he had many more assets than he really did. That didn’t sit well with his wife.
