Chapters (62)
“We’ve got a masked woman in her twenties or thirties. We don’t know what she looks like or what nationality she is but we know she has long, dark-brown hair,” said Zoe, making a note on her paper.
“That narrows it down.”
Zoe made a face and continued. “She was wearing a mask and so was her husband. That means they follow safety protocols which also means… they’re probably law-abiding citizens in every other respect.”
“I hate to tell you, but with this virus, Jack the Ripper would probably wear a mask.”
“Okay, so they could also be career criminals. Happy now?” said Zoe, squinting at him as Sean sighed. “The woman had on a white baseball hat that Detective Williams said looked like an Italian flag. Which means she could be Italian… or not.” Zoe wrote in her notebook.
“We’ve got nothing,” said Sean shaking his head.
“Don’t be that boy. Nobody likes a quitter. We’re just getting started,” said Zoe, sitting up straight in her chair. “That woman was wearing a navy-blue mask that had a white dress shirt and red tie logo on it. In her text messages, she talked about working at T and C which in my mind has to be Thayer and Company.”
“It’s possible but…”
“Hear me out,” said Zoe, holding up her left hand. “What if the mask was issued by Thayer and Company for their employees. Lots of companies are doing that now. Thayer and Co sells high-end men’s dress clothing. I’ll bet a lot of the top stores have their own company masks for employees now.”
“That does make sense,” said Sean, impressed by her thinking.
“Exactly,” said Zoe, pointing at Sean’s notebook. “Write that down. We need to find out if Thayer and Company has their own masks.” Sean made a note. “Other than the mask, the woman was dressed in ordinary navy-blue leggings and a white, long-sleeved T-shirt. She had a small navy-blue leather cross-body bag and a canvas tote that said Blue Crest Financial on it. Maybe her husband, the person she’s trying to kill, works for Blue Crest Financial?”
“But she said her husband was buying crap on eBay and complained in her text to her boyfriend about all the junk piled up in their apartment,” said Sean, making a few more notes. “I don’t see an executive from Blue Crest bidding on junk on eBay.”
“Maybe her husband used to work at Blue Crest but got furloughed because of the pandemic?”
“What if she’s got a friend who works at Blue Crest and they gave her the bag,” said Sean. “Don’t forget, she also had a Gucci shopping bag. That means, she either has money or she spends what little she has on luxury goods.”
“Good one, Sean, psych profile, nice.”
