Her attention drifted from the TV news when she heard a ping. It was a text from her handsome husband with the piercing blue eyes. She smiled. Did she marry him because of his all-American good looks and unwavering moral compass or because he was a bona-fide FBI agent who packed a gun. She suspected it was a little of both.
Her little crush on the dashing lawman began the first time she laid eyes on Conner Brandt. He had been sitting next to another agent in her living room wearing a crisp navy-blue jacket. That’s when she noticed he had a single dimple on his right cheek. Something about the asymmetry of that dimple intrigued her. Special Agents Brandt and Wallace had come to her Upper West Side Manhattan apartment to ask some questions about a bank robbery she had witnessed.
“Ms. Ferreira,” said Agent Brandt sitting across from her on a gray living-room couch, “is there anything else you remember about the assailant?”
Zoe shook her head. “Like I said, I went into the bank with my co-worker, Juliet Pasternak. We’re co-captains on the night shift at Villa d’Luna. It’s an Italian restaurant.”
“Co-captains?” asked Agent Wallace.
“Sorry, restaurant speak. We’re the evening shift co-managers. We’re responsible for all the servers and anything else that comes up during our shift.”
“Got it,” said Conner Brandt making a note.
“On the day of the bank robbery, Miranda—she’s Villa d’Luna’s owner—asked me to take a large amount of cash to deposit at the local bank before my shift started,” said Zoe. “I was a little nervous because it was a lot of money so she asked Juliet to go with me. Juliet and I aren’t really friends but she was the only one who was free. Anyway, we went into the bank together and were waiting in line when there was this loud bang and the front doors slammed open. I started to turn when I heard somebody scream ‘gun’. You don’t have to tell me twice if there’s a gun involved. I hit that floor, closed my eyes and prayed.”
“It must have been scary,” said Agent Brandt.
“I couldn’t move,” said Zoe. “The man with the gun was shouting commands. I opened my eyes for a second and saw Juliet next to me on the floor trembling and crying. That’s when I realized I was crying too.”
“I met with Ms. Pasternak yesterday and she told a similar story,” said Agent Brandt. “Do you think you could identify the gunman?”
“I didn’t see his face, but I’d recognize his voice if I heard it again,” said Zoe. “If you do a line-up, can you make them talk so I could hear them speak?”
“That’s possible,” said Conner.
