Chapters (62)
Just then, Detective Williams reappeared through the fire door with Heather Kim. “I’ve brought my partner up to speed,” said Daryl. “Ms. Brandt, you were saying you could read every word on the woman’s phone from your third-floor window. Is that correct?”
“Every single word,” said Zoe, nodding.
“And, the woman’s husband—the one we think she’s going to have killed—he was sitting right next to her bidding on a profoundly ugly lamp on eBay,” said Sean.
“Ms. Brandt, before, you told me you were alone,” said the detective, cocking his head to one side and staring at her.
“I was alone. Sean and I were FaceTiming when I saw the couple in the park,” said Zoe. “We FaceTime every day. We usually do our first session right after we wake up in the morning, sometimes even before I brush my teeth. The next time is usually before nine—”
“I’ve got it,” said Daryl, pinching the space between his eyes with his thumb and forefinger. “I’m going to assume for a moment that everything you’ve reported is true. Can you describe this mystery masked woman to me?”
Zoe and Sean looked at each other.
“That’s a little hard,” said Zoe, “because like everyone else in the world in 2020, she was wearing a face mask.”
“Hair color? Eye Color? Height? Ethnicity?” said Detective Kim tapping her foot.
“She had on a baseball cap and a long, dark-brown ponytail was sticking out the back,” said Zoe. “I couldn’t see her eyes because she had on oversized aviator sunglasses with blue tinted lenses.”
“Skin color?” said Heather.
Zoe squinted as she thought. “Medium-ish? She might be olive-skinned, maybe Italian or someone with a tan. She could also have been a light-skinned African American. Or, I guess she could have been Indian or Southeast Asian too.”
“That narrows it down,” said Heather, looking at her partner and rolling her eyes. “Age?”
“Her face was covered up but based on her body…” said Zoe staring up at the ceiling, “It looked young. She was very fit. I’d say she was in her twenties or early thirties tops and she had fairly large breasts.”
“Height?” said Detective Williams.
“She was petite, maybe five foot three-ish,” said Sean.
“I thought you weren’t there,” said Detective Williams, “Didn’t Ms. Brandt just say you were FaceTiming?”
“I wasn’t there in the beginning but later I met up with Zoe,” said Sean. “We followed the couple through the park and over to the Lexington Avenue subway.”
“If those people are killers, like you say they are,” said Detective Williams, “that was a very dangerous thing to do.”
“They didn’t see us,” said Zoe. “We followed them but then we lost them, twice. We think they live somewhere on the Lower East Side.”
“Right after we lost them the second time, we came directly here,” said Sean.
