Zoe’s body slumped in her chair. “None of it makes sense,” she said getting teary. “I’ve gone over it in my head a million times. If Conner didn’t want to be married to me and wanted to be with her so badly, why didn’t he just get a divorce?”
“We’ve learned a fair amount about Conner and Ms. García-Harmen. She’s quite an operator,” said Heather. “We dug into her past and communicated with the Mexican police. Gabriela was well known to them in Mexico City. She worked the rich old man circuit trading sexual favors for cash and expensive jewelry. Apparently, she bilked one wealthy old man out of a great deal of money and then hit the road for New York.”
“That’s who Conner fell for?” said Zoe. “A grifter?”
“After she overstayed her visa in the U.S.,” said Daryl, “she seduced the husband of the family who employed her as a nanny. She took him for a fair amount too. When her employer lost his job at Blue Crest Financial—”
“Blue Crest Financial! That’s where she got the white bag with the red letters,” said Sean. “I knew there was a connection.”
“When that man lost his job at Blue Crest,” said Daryl, “he couldn’t afford Gabriela and her extravagant tastes. When the family terminated her employment, she married Greg Harmen as a stop-gap to get her green card and become legal in the United States.”
Zoe and Sean turned and looked at each other.
“Greg Harmen is also a victim here,” said Heather. “He knew nothing about any of this. Seems Gabriela’s had her sights set on living the high life in New York City ever since she was a kid. After she got her green card and deportation was no longer an issue, she looked around for someone who could provide her with the more luxurious lifestyle she felt she deserved. That’s when she met your husband.”
“But Conner had no money,” said Zoe.
“On the FBI’s dime he looked like he did. Conner had gone to Thayer and Company to buy a whole new wardrobe for his undercover assignment,” said Daryl. “When she saw him spending thousands on clothes without concern for price, she thought he had real potential. He wined and dined her using his expense account and regularly met her at his FBI-issued “cover apartment” on Park Avenue.
“That’s when Gabriela started calling him Señor Bello,” said Heather. “That was her pet name for him. They agreed never to use their real names when texting. He was always Sr. Bello and she was his Wardrobe Consultant.”
“But it was all fake, Conner didn’t make that kind of money,” said Zoe. “He couldn’t afford all those expensive clothes. We struggled to pay our bills at the end of every month. Eventually, she would have found that out.”
