The noise is coming from inside the plastic bag. Taking the bag over to the bed, she dumped the contents out. That’s when she noticed something was inside the zippered pocket of her pants. Sliding the zipper to the left she found an Android phone inside. Where did this come from?
Staring at it, an image flashed in front of her. I found this phone in Conner’s overnight bag. Why did I put it in my pants pocket? She wrinkled her forehead and groaned, trying to remember. It had something to do with text messages.
She tried to open the messages but the phone required a password. Shit. What are the passwords Conner uses? She punched in half a dozen combinations and was about to give up when she tried their wedding anniversary and the phone unlocked. She smiled, let out a soft squeal and clicked on the messages icon.
There were only two contacts on the phone, the first text exchange was with someone called “Pest Control”.
What kind of problem do you need help with?
I’ve got a rodent infestation in my house.
A large rodent like a raccoon or something small like a mouse?
Small like a mouse. How soon are you available to take care of my problem?
The texts were familiar. Zoe held her breath, puffed up her cheeks and then blew it out. I know I’ve seen these texts before.
Slowly, bits of her memories started to connect in a more linear way. She clicked over to the other contact, “Wardrobe Consultant” and opened the most recent message. It had been sent that morning and hadn’t yet been read. That’s why it was pinging. It was a new message alert.
Sr. Bello, what’s going on? I’ve been waiting for a week to hear from you. Is she dead?
Zoe grabbed for the bed to steady herself. When she regained her balance, she sat down and read the full chain of texts from the beginning.
When I got furloughed from T and C I thought it would only be a few weeks. They announced this week that they’re closing some of their stores. Rumor is they’re going to file for bankruptcy. What am I supposed to do now?
You’re too good for that place. Trust me, it will all be over on Thursday.
Feeling sick, Zoe scrolled through the chain of texts until she got to the end.
I can’t wait to feel your body next to mine again.
Nauseous, she now knew her husband was behind everything. She didn’t know exactly how but she knew why. She also knew she was the intended victim the masked woman was talking about that first day in the park, not the woman’s husband.
