“I have my ways,” said Sean, his eyes crinkling as he walked into the room.
“As long as you’re here, we’ve got a few questions for you too.” The detectives turned back to Zoe while Sean placed the heavy plant on the nightstand.
“The evening you overdosed you sent Sean a text saying you knew who tried to kill you?” said Heather. “What exactly did you mean by that?”
“I don’t remember. I’ve been trying,” said Zoe, “but it won’t come.”
“Retrace your steps after you got back to your apartment,” said Daryl. “You went into your bedroom…”
“I think I got into my bed when we got home. I was tired,” said Zoe looking out the window. “Conner offered to make me a bourbon so I could take a nap. He had to go somewhere…”
“…To his office,” said Daryl.
“Yes, that’s right. He had to sign something,” she said with a smile. “I heard him leave and I wanted to go to sleep so I took… Ambien.”
“Then, you did take the pills,” said Heather glancing over at her partner.
Zoe’s face scrunched up as she searched for an answer. “I did… but only one. There was only one pill left in my nightstand. That’s all I took.” She closed her eyes and spoke slowly. “Conner’s dirty shirts were piled at the foot of our bed. I noticed some of them were from Thayer and Co, and it made me think of the masked woman. I drank my bourbon and went into his closet because I wanted to do a load of laundry.”
“You took Ambien, had a bourbon and then decided to do laundry?” said Heather, squinting. “Damn.”
“Guess I was a little drunk,” said Zoe. “Laundry seemed like a good idea at the time.”
“Then what happened?” said Daryl.
Zoe rubbed her eyes. “I don’t know. It’s a blank.”
“Do you remember calling Sean?”
“No… wait, wait… I was in Conner’s closet straightening his clothes and I found a face mask. It was navy with a white shirt and red tie emblem.”
“Like the one you saw on the masked woman with your binoculars?” said Sean, his eyes wide.
Zoe nodded. “Yes. I remember looking at the mask and I started feeling really woozy. Then the room started to spin, which was weird because I’ve had bourbon with an Ambien plenty of times and that never happened before.”
“Looks like there’s a party going on here,” said a half-smiling Conner standing in the doorway. “Good morning, detectives.”
“We’re just wrapping up. Anything else you can recall, Ms. Brandt?” said Daryl.
“Do you remember vomiting into the toilet?” asked Heather.
“No,” said Zoe rubbing her temples. “Did I?”
“Detectives, I appreciate your concern, but my wife is supposed to rest. Can we pick this up at a later date,” said Conner walking over to Zoe’s bed.
