“I had to go, or my marriage was going to implode,” said Zoe. “Conner insisted. It wasn’t so bad. Dr. Eisdorfer was pretty nice and she always kept Jolly Rancher candy in a bowl on her coffee table.”
“I love the watermelon flavor,” said Sean, his eyes lighting up.
“I like the sour apple. Anyway, Dr. Eisdorfer said I had an extremely creative imagination but made me promise Conner that I was finished with all the conspiracy stuff. I don’t consider what you and I investigate to be ‘conspiracy stuff’. We make educated opinions based on hard evidence.”
“That Brazilian au pair was acting very strange,” said Sean supportively. “She didn’t know a thing about caipirinhas when you asked her, remember? That’s the official drink of Brazil. You can’t be from Brazil and not know about caipirinhas.”
“That’s exactly what I thought,” said Zoe, taking one last look around for the masked couple. “I still think that au pair was involved with an international madam or drug smuggler. She could have been a drug mule.”
Half a block down on the opposite side of the street, the masked man and woman emerged from a Jewish deli. “Look, it’s them,” said Zoe, pointing as Sean’s eyes followed her finger.
“Where?”
“Over there, across the street, halfway down the block, walking past that red SUV. See them?”
“Yes,” said Sean. “It’s definitely them.”
“C’mon, let’s go,” said Zoe as she ran across the street with her partner in crime by her side. “We’re back in business.”
Hanging back, they carefully followed the masked couple down East 13th Street.
“She’s quite the ice princess,” said Zoe, “strolling leisurely with the man she’s planning to murder like she doesn’t have a care in the world. You’d never guess from her demeanor that she was going to have her husband bumped off in a few days. She’s even holding his arm. If I didn’t know the truth, I’d swear she likes him.”
“No kidding,” said Sean walking alongside her. “Slow down. There’s hardly anyone else on this street. We don’t want to draw attention to ourselves. Once we follow them to their home address, we go to the police, right? Then, we’re done.”
“Wait, what’s the man doing?” Zoe gasped. “Shit, he’s hailing another cab.” When a yellow taxi pulled up next to the masked couple, the man opened the car door for his wife and they both climbed in.
“We’ve got to get a car fast,” said Zoe. “They’re stopped at that light. We’ve only got a minute.”
Frantically, Sean looked up and down the streets. There were hardly any cars on the roads and not a taxi in sight. “I’ll get us an Uber.” Sean shouted as he opened his app.
