After a little more coaxing, Zoe took a shower while Conner unpacked his wife’s overnight bag and straightened up their bedroom. When he heard the shower turn off, he called out to her, “I’m going to the kitchen to get some water, I’ll be right back.”

She was in her pajamas and sitting on the bed when he returned. She looked up and smiled at him. “Despite everything that happened, it does feel good to be home,” she said.

“The police called while you were in the shower. They want me to come down tomorrow morning to make a statement.”

Zoe nodded.

“Also, there’s nothing to eat in this place,” said Conner as he opened his overnight bag on the bed and started to unpack. “What were you living on? The fridge is empty.”

Zoe shrugged her shoulders as Conner sorted his dirty clothes into piles on the bed from his week out-of-town. “Need to take my dirty dress shirts to the cleaners tomorrow. I’ve got nothing to wear,” he said as he took his shaving kit into the bathroom. Reaching over, she picked up one of his dress shirts and sniffed. Smells like Conner. She smiled. The label on the shirt said Brooks Brothers. She picked up another, it was from Thayer and Co. Three shirts were from Thayer and Co and three were from Brooks Brothers.

“Do you buy all your shirts from Brooks Brothers and Thayer?” Zoe called out to her husband, now inside of his walk-in closet.

Conner popped his head out. “Been shopping there since I was in college. Both those stores are expensive but I wait for the sales. Why?”

“I never noticed where you got your clothes from before,” said Zoe.

“That’s because you never do laundry.”

Zoe smiled. “True.”

“Since I’m taking time off this week because of what happened, my supervisor asked me to stop in today and sign-off on something for a case I’m working on.”

“You’re leaving me?” she said, worry in her eyes.

“Babe, you’ll be fine. I’ll be back in less than three hours,” he said, sitting on the bed next to her and taking her hand.

“Three hours?”

“Also, since we’ve got nothing in the house to eat, I’ll stop at the market and pick up something for dinner.”

“I’m not hungry. I just want to take a nap,” said Zoe, her face ashen.

“How about I make you a bourbon to help you fall asleep?”

“Okay,” said Zoe, surprised by his offer of an afternoon cocktail. “That would be great.”
