After Zoe finished her dinner, she went into the kitchen, poured herself her nightly glass of bourbon and climbed back onto the couch to wait for her husband’s call. At 8pm, her phone rang. It was Conner. “Hello there, stranger,” she said as she swirled the ice cubes in her glass. “Right on time, as always. I like a punctual man.”
“I’ve only got a few minutes to talk. The team is going to meet tonight at some outdoor beer garden,” said Conner.
“That sounds fun. Don’t get too close to people.”
“I’m always careful. Did you call someone to fix the front door lock?”
“No, but I’m writing myself a note right now,” said Zoe reaching for a pen and writing LOCK on the palm of her hand in black ink.
“What’s the problem, Zoe? You’re not working right now. The only thing you had to do this week was to get that lock fixed. Or are you too involved with Sean on all of your ‘investigations’ to have time for anything else?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. There’s been a lot of stuff going on at the restaurant. We’re reopening outside next week and this morning Miranda let half the staff go. I still have my job but—”
“I got a call from Juliet Pasternak today.”
“Juliet? How does she have your number?”
“From the bank robbery investigation, I guess. She told me she was concerned about you, that you were talking about conspiracies at the restaurant today,” said an exasperated Conner.
“I never even spoke to her,” said Zoe. That bitch. “She’s mad because she lost her job and I didn’t. Conner, you’ve got to believe me. You know Juliet and I never got along.”
“We’ll talk about it when I get home. I’ve got to go. I’m getting a ride from someone and they just pulled up outside. Get the lock fixed. I’ll be home in three days and we can talk then.”
“I swear, Juliet is making stuff up.”
“Okay.”
“Love you.”
“Gotta go.”
She put her phone down and stared at the word LOCK written on her hand. I can’t believe Juliet called Conner. What is she up to? After one last text check, she turned off the living-room lights and walked back to her master bathroom to brush her teeth. Opening her cabinet, she took out the brand-new prescription of Ambien that she had picked up earlier that week.
Conner was so cranky tonight. He’s still mad about all that stuff from last year. Now, he’s blowing everything way out of proportion. He wasn’t going to be fired. Does he believe Juliet over me?
