- About the Author
What the hell am I doing? I questioned. I continued to jump from one adventure to the next.
Victoria returned to the line with all of her enthusiastic energy.
“So, what’s going on, Terrance? Will they have you all up under the camera tonight? Are you wearing sunshades right now?”
“Sunshades? Nah, I don’t wear those much. I like looking people in the eyes.”
“Oh, well, that’s good. I’m an eye-contact person myself. You make a stronger connection that way.”
“I agree,” I told her.
“So, do you travel out of the country a lot, too?”
“Yeah, when the job calls for it, you’re there.”
“What are some of the places you’ve been to so far?”
It was a different kind of energy. I felt like she was verbally pushing me up against the wall. We were playing a championship tennis match. I had no chance to rest.
“Ah, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Italy, of course, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands…”
“Wow,” she interjected. “That’s the part I really admire. I mean, I wanna travel so badly. So at my job, like, any out-of-town functions that come up, I’m there. But I don’t get a chance to fly out of the country. I mean, I’ve been to Canada once, and to Puerto Rico, but, you know, like, Amsterdam. That’s great!”
“Yeah, it’s an interesting place,” I told her.
“I bet it is.”
I said, “But I’m not too busy tonight. They wanted to do a meet and greet out and around town, but I just wanna relax a minute.”
“Yeah, I can just imagine. You can’t run on a full tank all the time. You have to settle down and refuel.”
I asked her, “But what about you? What’s your thing to do?” I didn’t want the entire conversation to be about me.
“Oh, me, I just go. Whatever it is, I just go do it. You tell me to be there, and if I wanna go, then I’m there. And everyone knows that about me.”
I was stuck for a minute. The girl seemed as if she was game, but I had to make sure I wasn’t hearing things the wrong way.
“So you would just jump up and travel, just like that?” I asked her.
“Yeah, just like that.”
“But what about your job?”
“I told you, they let me do it. I mean, it’s not like I travel for weeks at a time or anything, but two, three days, yeah. And I come back and get right back to work. I even give them ideas over the phone when I’m gone half the time.”
I kept my investigation going.
“Well, what does your guy have to say about all of this?”
“My guy, you mean like a boyfriend or something?”
She waited for me to answer. That meant she didn’t have one. That also meant she had a story to tell about it. Women weren’t that much different. If she had a boyfriend, she would have just come out with it.
