- About the Author
“Yeah,” Juanita answered.
“Do you have Andrea’s number?” I asked her.
“Leave it alone, Terrance. It’s already over and done with,” my sister warned me. “And I wouldn’t give it to you if I had it.”
I was ready to argue with her, but what was the point in that?
“Okay,” I told her. I hung up and moved on.
I located Corey Sanders’s number and called him up. It took a few rings before he answered. I was ready to leave a message for him to call me back.
“Yeah, is this Terrance?”
“You got caller ID?” I asked him.
“Of course I do. That’s the way of the world now. So what can I do for you today, Terrance? You headin’ this way anytime soon?”
He was referring to Chicago.
I said, “As a matter of fact, I am. I just got the call today. I think they need me in Chicago by next weekend.”
I hadn’t gotten a chance to call and confirm any dates yet, but Corey didn’t know that.
“Oh, well, look me up when you get to town. I know where all the new hot spots are.”
“Do you know where Andrea is?” I figured I’d go straight to the business at hand.
“Why?”
“I wanna talk to her. You brought her back up to me,” I reminded him.
“Yeah, but I don’t have any contact for her. I wish I did.”
“Well, what about the guy she married? You know how to reach him, right?”
Corey went silent for a spell. “Now, you don’t want to go through him, do you?”
“I’m just trying to track the girl down.”
“Track her down for what?”
Sounded to me like Corey knew more than he was willing to tell. It almost sounded like he was trying to protect her.
I asked him, “How well do you even know Andrea?”
“I don’t know her that well. I just know that she was fine, and that she was caught up between two men.”
“How do you know that?”
“That’s what happened, ain’t it? I know both sides of the story. I saw when you were with her, and I saw when he was with her.”
“Well, how did he treat her? Are they still married?”
I wanted to see how much Corey would reveal.
“He paid more attention to her than you did, but he was extra possessive, too. I think she liked being with you more. And I haven’t heard about any divorce, but I know they’re at least separated.
“I haven’t seen her around on the town with him lately, ever since the miscarriage,” he added.
I said, “So how the hell do you know all these things?”
“Hey man, I do security work for the stars. I know things.”
“So what were you, just infatuated with the girl?” I asked him. It sure seemed that way. I still needed to understand his angle.
He said, “I guess so.”
“And you don’t have any contacts for her?” If he was that connected he could do a background check, a credit check, or something to find her for me. My guess was that he didn’t want to.
