- About the Author
“I got it,” she told me.
I faced Victoria and told her I would give her a call. I didn’t know if I meant it yet.
She said, “You make sure you do that. All right?”
That didn’t sound like business. That sounded like an East Coast pickup.
I said, “All right,” and caught up to follow Kim to the limo that was waiting for us outside.
As soon as Kim and I walked out of the airport exit, she smiled and said, “That white girl was all over you. Who is she?”
“I just sort of met her on the plane,” I told her.
“Who started the conversation?”
“She did. She noticed me from the magazines and kept staring at me.”
Kim mumbled, “Mmm hmm, them white girls don’t play. They see what they want and they go right after it.”
“But she was going after business.”
“Business with a black man, yeah.”
I smiled and chuckled at it. “I couldn’t read the girl until the end. She just sounded real eager to find a way into the modeling and entertainment business.”
“Or, she could find a man to date who’s already in it,” Kim stated.
We reached the limo and the driver popped open the trunk to put my luggage in. He was an older black man with a short, graying afro.
“How are you doing?” he greeted me.
“I’m good. How are you?”
“Hanging in there.”
“Well, don’t let it kill you,” I told him. “In fact, let me get the luggage.”
He smiled and insisted that he stack the luggage inside the trunk for me.
“Now don’t take my job away from me, young fella. I’ve been doing this here for thirty-two years,” he told me. “I remember when it wasn’t too many black folks riding in limos. It was hard for me to even get to drive one.”
Kim said, “We came a long way, ain’t we?” and climbed inside.
“You can say that again,” our driver responded.
I climbed in after her, and the driver shut the door behind us.
Kim was looking mighty peaceful in the back of the limo. She looked like she had some good thoughts on her mind.
I asked her, “So you’ve been feeling pretty good lately, huh?”
I could see it in her. She had a twinkle in her eyes and everything.
“I’ve been feeling pretty good, yeah.”
I grinned. “It ain’t a new guy in your life, is it?”
I had never gotten into Kim’s personal life. She was one to keep business and pleasure separate. I had never even seen her with a guy. But I know she had to have one. She talked about the “hotties” too much not to. That’s what she called us all. Kim knew the breakdown on many types of men, too. She studied us.
All she did was grin at my question. I didn’t expect her to answer it anyway. So I moved on.
“Yeah, so what’s this thing you want to talk to me about?” I asked her.
